Our present knowledge about the evolutionary status of extremely hydrogen-deficient stars is reviewed. Possible schemes for their creation are discussed, with special emphasis on a recently proposed binary scenario, according to which they are the result of the merging of two white dwarfs. Finally, the possible generic links between the different groups of extremely hydrogen-deficient stars are briefly discussed.
