Populism in Europe - A Government & Opposition Collection
Government & Opposition Fellow Adrian Favero introduces the articles most recently added to our collection on ‘populism’ – which brings together a number of contributions to the journal that deal with issues that are both central to and connected with the wider phenomenon. Those articles are listed below.
The last update to the collection on populism was completed in August 2018. You can find the introduction to that update here. The introduction for the original collection can be found here. In this latest update, we highlight three essays still in FirstView. These essays deal with the way we think about populist parties and the way we analyze the particular phenomenon of left-wing populism.
Mattia Zulianello provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the classification of populist parties to evaluate ideational varieties and the role they play in respective party systems. With his research, he offers a pan-European perspective that highlights how research on populist parties can be substantially enriched with a more refined and dynamic analysis of the different interaction streams characterizing these actors, instead of treating them as ‘challengers’ or ‘outsiders’.
Nuria Font, Paolo Graziano and Myrto Tsakatika test the heuristic validity of binary classifications of populism, such as the inclusionary–exclusionary classification. By comparing three populist parties in Southern Europe: SYRIZA in Greece, the Five Star Movement (FSM) in Italy and Podemos in Spain, they demonstrate the wider usefulness and potential of inclusionary populism for comparative research.
Ioannis Balampanidis, Ioannis Vlastaris, George Xezonakis and Magdalini Karagkiozoglou look at the interaction of social democratic and radical left parties that evolved during the economic crisis in Southern Europe. They compare different national cases (Greece, Portugal, Spain and France) to demonstrate how the crisis has modified the dynamics between the radical left and social democracy.
