Eve's polemic on the relatively insignificant contribution of sociological studies of friendship to the central concerns of the discipline has some force. However, he weakens his case in three main ways. Firstly, his over-reliance on Giddens to demonstrate the contrast in the importance of personalistic relations between ‘traditional’ and ‘late-modern’ societies. See for example Allan Silver. Secondly, Eve's contention that there is an over-reliance on dyadic relationships in the study of friendship is becoming outdated, as demonstrated in the major ESRC project ‘Rethinking Friendship’. Thirdly, Eve underestimates the importance of analyses of friendship in contemporary sociological studies of stratification and power. For example, the so-called velvet revolution of 1989 in Eastern Europe were fuelled by the friend-based organisation of radically dissident intellectuals.

Tout d'abord, un excès de confiance accordé à la position de Giddens concernant l'opposition entre sociétés traditionnelles et sociétés modernes avancées en ce qui concerne l'importance des relations personnelles. Deuxièmement, Eve semble ne pas connaître les travaux du programme de la Fondation européenne de la science “Rethinking friendship” qui cernent l'importance centrale des communautés de personnes, au-delà des relations dyadiques. Enfin, la place des relations d'amitié dans les études contemporaines de la stratification et du pouvoir est largement sousestimée. Le meilleur exemple est donné par la révolution de velours en Europe de l'Est où il est prouvé que les réseaux amicaux d'intellectuels dissidents ont joué un rôle capital.

Erstens besteht ein Vertrauensüberschuß in Giddens Position bezüglich dem Widerspruch zwischen traditionellen und modernen Gesellschaften auf dem Gebiet der persönlichen Beziehungen. Zweitens scheint Eve nicht die Arbeiten der europäischen Gesellschaft für Wissenschaften ”Rethinking friendship“ zu kennen, die ganz eindeutig die Bedeutung der Personengemeinschaften aufzeigt. Und schließlich ist der Platz der Freundschaften in zeitgenössischen Studien über Schichten und Staatsgewalt stark unterschätzt. Das beste Beispiel ist die sogenannte Samtrevolution in Osteuropa, hier haben befreundete Dissidentenkreise eine entscheidende Rolle gespielt.
