This essay relates the normative discussion about social justice in political philosophy to empirical results from social policy analysis, thus linking two lines of discussions that have hitherto run mostly separately. The argument will be developed by answering four questions. The normative question: what regulative ideas of social justice does the debate about justice in political philosophy supply? The action-theoretical question: what criteria for judgement and political preferences can be found for a justice-oriented politics? The empirical question: how can the ‘three worlds of welfare capitalism’ be judged in the light of these hierarchically ordered criteria of justice? And finally the institutional question: which logic should underpin a reform of the welfare state, if this reform is to be both socially just and at the same time realistically achievable.

L'étude entend relier la discussion normative sur la justice sociale aux résultats empiriques des analyses de politique sociale. Quatre questions sont abordées. La première porte sur les normes: quelles sont les idées régulatrices de justice sociale qu'offre la philosophie politique? La seconde touche à la théorie de l'action: quels sont les critères de jugement et les choix politiques en accord avec une priorité donnée à la justice sociale? La troisième est empirique: comment peut-on classer les trois mondes du capitalisme de bien-être selon les dits critères de justice hiérarchisés? La dernière est d'ordre institutionnel: quelle logique devrait soutenir une réforme de l'État-providence qui aurait pour ambition d'être à la fois socialement juste et réaliste?

Diese Studie macht sich zur Aufgabe, die normative Diskussion über die soziale Gerechtigkeit mit den Ergebnissen der Analyse der Sozialpolitik zu verbinden. Vier Fragen werden aufgenommen. Die erste setzt sich mit Normen auseinander: welche regulierenden Ideen der sozialen Gerechtigkeit bietet die politische Philosophie? Die zweite befasst sich mit der Handlungstheorie: welche Richtschemen und politischen Entscheidungen fordern soziale Gerechtigkeit? Die dritte Frage ist empirischer Art: wie können die drei Wellnesswelten des Kapitalismus nach den genannten Gerechtigkeitskriterien eingeordnet werden? Die letzte befasst sich mit Institutionen: welcher Logik muss eine Reform des Wohlfahrtsstaates folgen, die sowohl sozialgerecht als auch realistisch sein will?
