La mise en gage des personnes. Sociologie comparative d'une institution

Abstract

This article examines the well known practice in pre-colonial Africa of the pawning of humans. This practice, also found in Asia, should be distinguished from slavery, despite its similar characteristics. The author enumerates relevant principles and establishes concrete boundaries. A number of misunderstandings are thus elucidated and the concept is clearly explained.

Dans cet article est examinée la question bien connue en Afrique precoloniale de la «mise en gage » (angl. pawning) des personnes. L'institution, qui se retrouve en Asie, avec ses caractérisdques proches, doit etre distinguée de l'esclavage. L'auteur dégage les principes et etablit les contours concrets. Plusieurs confusions sont ainsi elucidees et la mise au point est claire.

In diesem Aufsatz wird das im vorkolonialen Afrika sehr bekannte Phanomen der »Personenverpfantung « untersucht. Diese Einrichtung, die auch in Asien mit »ähnlichen Charakteristika auftritt, muss von der Versklavung unterschiedcn werden. Der Autor beschreibt die Prinzipien und skizziert die Konturen. Meh-rere Verwechslungen können so ausgeräumt werden, die Rich-tigstellung ist präzise.
