Both of these books can be highly recommended, but for different reasons. Christopher Hann's edited collection will help to raise the profile of the social anthropological approach in post-communist studies, and our awareness of attitudes ‘on the ground’, especially in rural communities. The methodologies of the Emigh and Szelényi collection will be more familiar to most readers, but the book contains valuable new data and some welcome problematising of concepts such as poverty and underclass.

Les deux livres sous revue (C. M. Hann [ed.], Postsocialism: Ideals, Ideologies and Practices in Eurasia and Rebecca Jean Emigh and Iván Szelényi [eds], Poverty, Ethnicity, and Gender in Eastern Europe During the Market Transition) sont de grand intérêt pour des raisons différentes. Le volume collectif dirigé par Hann contribue à fixer les lignes d'une approche anthropologique des sociétés postcommunistes avec prise en compte des attitudes des communautés rurales. Le recueil méthodologique présenté par Emigh et Szelényi sera plus familier aux sociologues; il met à disposition des données neuves, intéressantes ainsi qu'une réflexion problématique bien venue sur des concepts tels que pauvreté et “underclass”.

Die beiden Bücher empfehlen sich uns aus verschiedenen Gründen. Der Gemeinschaftsband, geleitet von Hann, zeigt die Linien der anthropologischen Erforschung der nachkommunistischen Gesellschaften auf, wobei die Verhaltensweisen der ländlichen Gemeinden mitberücksichtigt werden. Der methodologische Sammelband von Emigh und Szlényi wird den Soziologen vertrauter sein; er stellt neue, interessante Daten zur Verfügung und überdenkt die Konzepte Arbeit und ”Unterklasse“.
