On the alignment of T Tauri stars with the local magnetic field
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 17 November 2003
Abstract
The original title of this contribution was "Magnetic Fields in the Vicinity of Young Stars". One of the goals was to show the impact of the large scale magnetic field on the gravitational collapse leading to star formation, and also to discuss some of Jean-Louis Leroy's contributions to the measurement of the polarisation, hence the direction of the magnetic in the interstellar medium made with STERENN, the polarimeter he and Jean-François Leborgne built for the Pic-du-Midi observatory. Another goal of the talk was to survey the state of our knowledge of the magnetic field in the immediate circumstellar environment of young stars. In doing that we discovered an interesting correlation. Therefore, this paper presents only a brief overview of the original talk presented at the conference. Instead, it emphasizes largely on what we consider to be the most interesting aspect of what was presented, namely, the alignement of YSO, and in particular T Tauri stars, with the local magnetic field in Taurus.
