New methods are developed for identifying, estimating, and performing inference with nonstationary time series that have autoregressive roots near unity. The approach subsumes unit-root (UR), local unit-root (LUR), mildly integrated (MI), and mildly explosive (ME) specifications in the new model formulation. It is shown how a new parameterization involving a localizing rate sequence that characterizes departures from unity can be consistently estimated in all cases. Simple pivotal limit distributions that enable valid inference about the form and degree of nonstationarity apply for MI and ME specifications and new limit theory holds in UR and LUR cases. Normalizing and variance stabilizing properties of the new parameterization are explored. Simulations are reported that reveal some of the advantages of this alternative formulation of nonstationary time series. A housing market application of the methods is conducted that distinguishes the differing forms of house price behavior in Australian state capital cities over the past decade.

We propose a statistical procedure to determine the dimension of the nonstationary subspace of cointegrated functional time series taking values in the Hilbert space of square-integrable functions defined on a compact interval. The procedure is based on sequential application of a proposed test for the dimension of the nonstationary subspace. To avoid estimation of the long-run covariance operator, our test is based on a variance ratio-type statistic. We derive the asymptotic null distribution and prove consistency of the test. Monte Carlo simulations show good performance of our test and provide evidence that it outperforms the existing testing procedure. We apply our methodology to three empirical examples: age-specific U.S. employment rates, Australian temperature curves, and Ontario electricity demand.

It is well known that the conventional cumulative sum (CUSUM) test suffers from low power and large detection delay. In order to improve the power of the test, we propose two alternative statistics. The backward CUSUM detector considers the recursive residuals in reverse chronological order, whereas the stacked backward CUSUM detector sequentially cumulates a triangular array of backwardly cumulated residuals. A multivariate invariance principle for partial sums of recursive residuals is given, and the limiting distributions of the test statistics are derived under local alternatives. In the retrospective context, the local power of the tests is shown to be substantially higher than that of the conventional CUSUM test if a break occurs in the middle or at the end of the sample. When applied to monitoring schemes, the detection delay of the stacked backward CUSUM is found to be much shorter than that of the conventional monitoring CUSUM procedure. Furthermore, we propose an estimator of the break date based on the backward CUSUM detector and show that in monitoring exercises this estimator tends to outperform the usual maximum likelihood estimator. Finally, an application of the methodology to COVID-19 data is presented.

We develop a nonparametric Bayesian analysis of regression discontinuity (RD) designs, allowing for covariates, in which we model and estimate the unknown functions of the forcing variable by basis expansion methods. In a departure from current methods, we use the entire data on the forcing variable, but we emphasize the data near the threshold by placing some knots at and near the threshold, a technique we refer to as soft-windowing. To handle the nonequally spaced knots that emerge from soft-windowing, we construct a prior on the spline coefficients, from a second-order Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, which is hyperparameter light, and satisfies the Kullback–Leibler support property. In the fuzzy RD design, we explain the divergence between the treatment implied by the forcing variable, and the actual intake, by a discrete confounder variable, taking three values, complier, never-taker, and always-taker, and a model with four potential outcomes. Choice of the soft-window, and the number of knots, is determined by marginal likelihoods, computed by the method of Chib [Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1995, 90, 1313–1321] as a by-product of the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)-based estimation. Importantly, in each case, we allow for covariates, incorporated nonparametrically by additive natural cubic splines. The potential outcome error distributions are modeled as student-t, with an extension to Dirichlet process mixtures. We derive the large sample posterior consistency, and posterior contraction rate, of the RD average treatment effect (ATE) (in the sharp case) and RD ATE for compliers (in the fuzzy case), as the number of basis parameters increases with sample size. The excellent performance of the methods is documented in simulation experiments, and in an application to educational attainment of women from Meyersson [Econometrica, 2014, 82, 229–269].

We consider the adaptive Lasso estimator with componentwise tuning in the framework of a low-dimensional linear regression model. In our setting, at least one of the components is penalized at the rate of consistent model selection and certain components may not be penalized at all. We perform a detailed study of the consistency properties and the asymptotic distribution which includes the effects of componentwise tuning within a so-called moving-parameter framework. These results enable us to explicitly provide a set $\mathcal {M}$ such that every open superset acts as a confidence set with uniform asymptotic coverage equal to 1, whereas removing an arbitrarily small open set along the boundary yields a confidence set with uniform asymptotic coverage equal to 0. The shape of the set $\mathcal {M}$ depends on the regressor matrix as well as the deviations within the componentwise tuning parameters. Our findings can be viewed as a broad generalization of Pötscher and Schneider (2009, Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference 139, 2775–2790; 2010, Electronic Journal of Statistics 4, 334–360), who considered distributional properties and confidence intervals based on components of the adaptive Lasso estimator for the case of orthogonal regressors.

This paper introduces a novel wild bootstrap for dependent data (WBDD) as a means of calculating standard errors of estimators and constructing confidence regions for parameters based on dependent heterogeneous data. The consistency of the bootstrap variance estimator for smooth function of the sample mean is shown to be robust against heteroskedasticity and dependence of unknown form. The first-order asymptotic validity of the WBDD in distribution approximation is established when data are assumed to satisfy a near epoch dependent condition and under the framework of the smooth function model. The WBDD offers a viable alternative to the existing non parametric bootstrap methods for dependent data. It preserves the second-order correctness property of blockwise bootstrap (provided we choose the external random variables appropriately), for stationary time series and smooth functions of the mean. This desirable property of any bootstrap method is not known for extant wild-based bootstrap methods for dependent data. Simulation studies illustrate the finite-sample performance of the WBDD.

Functional coefficient (FC) regressions allow for systematic flexibility in the responsiveness of a dependent variable to movements in the regressors, making them attractive in applications where marginal effects may depend on covariates. Such models are commonly estimated by local kernel regression methods. This paper explores situations where responsiveness to covariates is locally flat or fixed. The paper develops new asymptotics that take account of shape characteristics of the function in the locality of the point of estimation. Both stationary and integrated regressor cases are examined. The limit theory of FC kernel regression is shown to depend intimately on functional shape in ways that affect rates of convergence, optimal bandwidth selection, estimation, and inference. In FC cointegrating regression, flat behavior materially changes the limit distribution by introducing the shape characteristics of the function into the limiting distribution through variance as well as centering. In the boundary case where the number of zero derivatives tends to infinity, near parametric rates of convergence apply in stationary and nonstationary cases. Implications for inference are discussed and a feasible pre-test inference procedure is proposed that takes unknown potential flatness into consideration and provides a practical approach to inference.

In many nonlinear panel data models with fixed effects maximum likelihood estimators suffer from the incidental parameters problem, which often entails that point estimates are markedly biased. While the recent literature has mostly generated methods that yield a first-order bias reduction relative to maximum likelihood, we derive a first- and second-order bias correction of the profile likelihood based on “expected quantities” which differs from the corresponding correction based on “sample averages” derived in Dhaene and Sun (2021, Journal of Econometrics 220, 227–252). While consistency and asymptotic normality of our estimator are derived in a setting where both the number of individuals and the number of time periods grow to infinity, we illustrate in a simulation study that our second-order bias reduction indeed yields an estimator with substantially improved small sample properties relative to its first-order unbiased counterpart, especially when less than 10 time periods are available.

Via generalized interval arithmetic, we propose a Generalized Interval Arithmetic Center and Range (GIA-CR) model for random intervals, where parameters in the model satisfy linear inequality constraints. We construct a constrained estimator of the parameter vector and develop asymptotically uniformly valid tests for linear equality constraints on the parameters in the model. We conduct a simulation study to examine the finite sample performance of our estimator and tests. Furthermore, we propose a coefficient of determination for the GIA-CR model. As a separate contribution, we establish the asymptotic distribution of the constrained estimator in Blanco-Fernández (2015, Multiple Set Arithmetic-Based Linear Regression Models for Interval-Valued Variables) in which the parameters satisfy an increasing number of random inequality constraints.

We revisit in-sample asymptotic analysis extensively used in the realized volatility literature. We show that there are gains to be made in estimating current realized volatility from considering realizations in prior periods. The weighting schemes also relate to Kalman-Bucy filters, although our approach is non-Gaussian and model-free. We derive theoretical results for a broad class of processes pertaining to volatility, higher moments, and leverage. The paper also contains a Monte Carlo simulation study showing the benefits of across-sample combinations.

We extend the notion of cointegration for time series taking values in a potentially infinite dimensional Banach space. Examples of such time series include stochastic processes in $C[0,1]$ equipped with the supremum distance and those in a finite dimensional vector space equipped with a non-Euclidean distance. We then develop versions of the Granger–Johansen representation theorems for I(1) and I(2) autoregressive (AR) processes taking values in such a space. To achieve this goal, we first note that an AR(p) law of motion can be characterized by a linear operator pencil (an operator-valued map with certain properties) via the companion form representation, and then study the spectral properties of a linear operator pencil to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a given AR(p) law of motion to admit I(1) or I(2) solutions. These operator-theoretic results form a fundamental basis for our representation theorems. Furthermore, it is shown that our operator-theoretic approach is in fact a closely related extension of the conventional approach taken in a Euclidean space setting. Our theoretical results may be especially relevant in a recently growing literature on functional time series analysis in Banach spaces.

We describe a (nonparametric) prediction algorithm for spatial data, based on a canonical factorization of the spectral density function. We provide theoretical results showing that the predictor has desirable asymptotic properties. Finite sample performance is assessed in a Monte Carlo study that also compares our algorithm to a rival nonparametric method based on the infinite $AR$ representation of the dynamics of the data. Finally, we apply our methodology to predict house prices in Los Angeles.

We estimate and test for multiple structural breaks in distribution via an empirical characteristic function approach. By minimizing the sum of squared generalized residuals, we can consistently estimate the break fractions. We propose a sup-F type test for structural breaks in distribution as well as an information criterion and a sequential testing procedure to determine the number of breaks. We further construct a class of derivative tests to gauge possible sources of structural breaks, which is asymptotically more powerful than the smoothed nonparametric tests for structural breaks. Simulation studies show that our method performs well in determining the appropriate number of breaks and estimating the unknown breaks. Furthermore, the proposed tests have reasonable size and excellent power in finite samples. In an application to exchange rate returns, our tests are able to detect structural breaks in distribution and locate the break dates. Our tests also indicate that the documented breaks appear to occur in variance and higher-order moments, but not so often in mean.

In this paper, we present a new nonparametric method for estimating a conditional quantile function and develop its weak convergence theory. The proposed estimator is computationally easy to implement and automatically ensures quantile monotonicity by construction. For inference, we propose to use a residual bootstrap method. Our Monte Carlo simulations show that this new estimator compares well with the check-function-based estimator in terms of estimation mean squared error. The bootstrap confidence bands yield adequate coverage probabilities. An empirical example uses a dataset of Canadian high school graduate earnings, illustrating the usefulness of the proposed method in applications.

Two adaptive bandwidth selection methods for minimizing the mean squared error of nonparametric estimators in locally stationary processes are proposed. We investigate a cross-validation approach and a method based on contrast minimization and derive asymptotic properties of both methods. The results are applicable for different statistics under a general setting of local stationarity including nonlinear processes. At the same time, we deepen the general framework for local stationarity based on stationary approximations. For example, a general Bernstein inequality is derived for such processes. The properties of the bandwidth selection methods are also investigated in several simulation studies.

This paper develops an estimation methodology for network data generated from a system of simultaneous equations, which allows for network interdependencies via spatial lags in the endogenous and exogenous variables, as well as in the disturbances. By allowing for higher-order spatial lags, our specification provides important flexibility in modeling network interactions. The estimation methodology builds, among others, on the two-step generalized method of moments estimation approach introduced in Kelejian and Prucha (1998, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics 17, 99–121; 1999, International Economic Review 40, 509–533; 2004, Journal of Econometrics 118, 27–50). The paper considers limited and full information estimators, and one- and two-step estimators, and establishes their asymptotic properties. In contrast to some of the earlier two-step estimation literature, our asymptotic results facilitate joint tests for the absence of all forms of network spillovers.

We develop theoretical finite-sample results concerning the size of wild bootstrap-based heteroskedasticity robust tests in linear regression models. In particular, these results provide an efficient diagnostic check, which can be used to weed out tests that are unreliable for a given testing problem in the sense that they overreject substantially. This allows us to assess the reliability of a large variety of wild bootstrap-based tests in an extensive numerical study.
