L’accord du participe passé dans les langues romanes: une approche morphosyntaxique

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present a unified analysis of Romance past participle agreement. Data from 19 standard and non-standard Romance varieties are considered. It is shown that in order to account for the variation found across the various Romance varieties, past participle agreement should not be considered as following simply from another module of the grammar, such as Case Theory, coindexation or the theory of functional categories, but should rather be considered from the point of view of a general theory of grammatical agreement. It is also shown that past participle agreement must be treated as an example of nominal-modifier agreement rather than as an example of verb-argument agreement.

Cet article a pour but de présenter une analyse unifiée de l’accord du participe passé dans les langues romanes. Des données de 19 variétés romanes standard et non-standard sont considérées. Il est démontré que pour rendre compte de la variation qui existe à travers ces diverses variétés, il faut considérer l’accord du participe passé non pas comme un phénomène qui découle simplement d’une autre composante de la grammaire, comme la théorie des Cas, la co-indexation ou la théorie des catégories fonctionnelles, mais plutôt du point de vue d’une théorie générale de l’accord grammatical. Il est aussi démontré que l’accord du participe passé doit être conçu non pas comme un exemple d’accord verbe-argument, mais plutôt comme un exemple d’accord nominal-modifieur.
