A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF THE NORTH AMERICAN SPECIES OF THE OREODYTES ALASKANUS CLADE (COLEOPTERA: DYTISCIDAE: HYDROPORINAE)

Abstract

North American members of the Oreodyies alaskanus clade are revised. The species O. productotruncatus (Hatch) and O. recticollis (Fall) are recognized as valid and those names are removed from junior synonymy with O. alaskanus (Fall.). Oreodytes leechi Zimmerman is considered a new junior subjective synonym of O. recticollis. Lectotype designations are provided for O. alaskanus and O. recticollis. Palaearctic O. dauricus (Motschulsky) is included within the O. alaskanus clade whose members are characterized by the protibia having the inner margin sinuate and strongly narrowed proximally, Oreodytes kanoi Kamiya, from Japan, is suggested as the sister-group of members of the O. alaskanus clade based on the shared presence in the female of a last abdominal sternite with an emargination at the apex.

Résumé

Les membres nord-américains du groupe monophylétique Oreodytes alaskanus sont révisés. Les espèces O. productotruncatus (Hatch) et O. recticollis (Fall) sont reconnues comme valides et ces noms ne sont plus considérés synonymes plus récents de O. alaskanus (Fall). Oreodytes leechi Zimmerman est considéré nouveau synonyme subjectif plus récent de O. recticollis. Une désignation lectotype est attribuée à O. alaskanus et O. recticollis respectivement. L’espèce paléarctique O. dauricus (Motschulsky) doit être incorporée dans le groupe monophylétique O. alaskanus. Cette espèce partage avec les autres espèces de ce groupe la présence d’un sinus très nettement démarqué sur la marge interne du protibia L’espèce O. kanoi Kamiya, du Japon, est suggérée comme groupe-consoeur du groupe monophylétique O. alaskanus étant donné la présence d’un sinus à l’extrémité du dernier segment abdominal de la femelle.
