EFFECT OF HOST TREE ACTIVITY ON THE RATE OF YOLK PROTEIN DEPOSITION IN DENDROCTONUS RUFIPENNIS (COLEOPTERA: SCOLYTIDAE)

Abstract

Comparison of yolk protein deposition rates as inferred from rates of leucine incorporation in ovarial yolk proteins was made between Dendroctonus rufipennis caged on living white spruce trees and freshly cut logs of the same species. Samples coinciding with resin exudation into the beetle galleries by the living tree revealed significant inhibition of this rate as compared with that observed on cut logs. These results constitute a clear example of the effect of a specific event in the tree on the reproductive processes of the adult beetle. Advantages of measuring rate of yolk deposition over counting total oviposition for determining the effect of various factors on reproduction are discussed.

Résumé

La comparison du taux de déposition de vitellus protéiniques, déduit du taux d’incorporation de la leucine dans les vitellus protéiniques de l’ovaire, a été faites entre le Dendroctonus rufipennis encagé sur des épinettes blanches vivantes et sur des billes fraîchement tronçonnées de la même espèce. Lorsque la résine des arbres vivants exuda dans les galeries creusées par le dendroctone, elle inhiba significantivement le dit taux comparativement aux billes tronçonnées. Il y a ici un exemple concret de l’effet d’un évènement spécifique dans l’arbre sur la reproduction du dendroctone adulte. Les auteurs discutent des avantages de mesurer le dit taux plutôt que compter le nombre total d’oeufs pondus pour déterminer l’effet de divers facteurs sur la reproduction.
