THE LARVAE AND PUPAE OF STICTOCHIRONOMUS MARMOREUS AND S. QUAGGA (DIPTERA: CHIRONOMIDAE)

Abstract

The larvae and pupae of Stictochironomus marmoreus (Townes) and S. quagga (Townes) are described. Diagnostic features of the larvae of S. marmoreus and S. quagga are found in the relative lengths of antennal segments 2 and 3, in the length of the antennal blade, and in the size of the mental teeth. The pupae can be distinguished by the conformation of the shagreen pattern on tergites II–V and the number of spines in the caudolateral comb on abdominal segment VIII. Preliminary keys to known Nearctic larvae and pupae of Stictochironomus are given.

Résumé

On décrit les larves et les pupes de Stictochironomus marmoreus (Townes) et de S. quagga (Townes). La longueur relative des articles antennaires 2 et 3, la longueur de la lamelle antennaire et la taille des dents du mentum sont des caractères utiles pour la séparation de ces espèces. Les pupes peuvent être séparées par la forme du patron de chagrin sur les tergites II–V et le nombre d'épines sur le peigne latéro-caudal du segment abdominal VIII. Des clés préliminaires applicables aux larves et aux pupes des espèces néarctiques connues de Stictochironomus sont fournies.
