page 11 note 1 In Baker's ‘ Collections ’ (Brit. Mus., Harl. 7048, fo. 176r.) a summary of a charter from Archbishop Richard which does not now exist in the cartulary is included in the extracts from the cartulary of St. Gregory's priory. It is dated 1175, and records an agreement between Richard, prior, and the canons of St. Gregory, and Ailgar, priest of Wootton, that Ailgar shall have the tithe of Wootton for the term of his life, in return for a yearly render of one mark to the priory. The text of the extract is as follows:

Ricardus dei gratia Cant, archiepiscopus etc. Ad universitatis vestrae noticiam volumus pervenire Ailgarum Presbiterum de Wedetune cum R. priore et canonicis ecclesiae sancti Gregorii super decimis de Wedetune ita composuisse. Tenebit si quidem idem Ailgarus easdem decimas quamdiu vixerit sed dando inde annuatim prefatis canonicis unam marcam argenti. Facta est autem hac compositio apud Cantuariam anno ab Incarn. Domini MCLXXV Ordinationis autem nostrae secundo. Hiis testibus. Magistro Ger. Walerano Baioc’ Archidiacono. Magistro Petro Bles.

page 15 note 1 At foot of fo. IIr., across both columns in different hand :

Anno dominice incarnationis 694 Withredus rex Cantie cum consensu consilii concessit Archiepiscopo Brightwaldo quod ipse et successores sui et omnes ecclesie regni sui essent deinceps in perpetuum libere perpetua libertate ad omnibus difficultatibus secularis servitutis ab omni debito vel pulsione regalium tributorum ut possint pro nobis deo omnipotenti hostias dignas offere. vide librum Archidiaconatus in medio libro … (4 words illegible).

page 15 note 2 There is no confirmation by Archbishop Thomas Becket in the cartulary.

page 30 note 1 In Baker's ‘ Collections ’ (Brit. Mus., Harl. 7048, fo. 175V.) a summary of a charter which does not now exist is included in the extracts from the cartulary of St. Gregory's priory. It has bearing on the above, for it refers to the dedication of Bekesbourne church, after the dispute about the advowson had been resolved. It can be dated 1190, the year that Archbishop Baldwin set out on a Crusade :

Omnibus Sanctae Matris Ecclesiae Filiis—G. divina miseratione Roff: ecclesiae Minister Salutem in Domino—Cum Domini Cant: Jerosolymam profecti fugientes officio ad dedicand’ ecclesiam de Burnis accederemus, Willelmus de Bee et Eustachius de Burnes qui de memorate ecclesie Patronatu inter se litigaverunt in unum convenerunt sub hac forma. Testibus hiis. Magistro Sampson. Magistro Willelmo Sancte Fide. etc.
