^{page 2 note 3} This Furnace Book passed to the Webster family, who bought the Robertsbridge estate in the 18th century, thence through the Phillips collection, and is now in the possession of the Henry E. Huntington Library, San Marino, Calif., whose help in supplying a microfilm copy is acknowledged. ^{page 3 note 4} This appears to be a 16th-century copy. It must be assumed that the lease was assigned to Sir William Sidney by Spycer, after a brief interval, this perhaps being the occasion for the making of the copy. The H.M.C. Calendar does not appear to refer to this item. It is uncertain whether the ‘Spycer’ from whom ore was bought in 1556 was the same man.

^{page 3 note 5} In this edition the H.M.C, numbering is placed at the top left of the first page of each item, and the Kent number at the top right. The H.M.C. numbers, being more familiar through their use in the Calendar and by other authors, are used in textual notes and in this introduction, except where ambiguity occurs. (The Kent references use the prefix U 1475.)
