La Vallée de Tehuacan (Mexique): 12 000 ans de Préhistoire

Au cours des cinq années de recherches interdisciplinaires menées par une mission de la « R. S. Peabody Foundation for Archaeology », nous avons pu accumuler, entre autres, un certain nombre d'informations concernant la population ancienne de la Vallée de Tehuacan et ses schèmes d'installation au sol; c'est un résumé et une tentative d'interprétation de ces données archéologiques que nous avons voulu présenter ici.

Les travaux de l'expédition ont permis de reconnaître 456 gisements; 12 d'entre eux, fouillés en stratigraphie, ont fourni 156 unités d'occupation, tandis que les sites de surface en révélaient 335. Le matériel ainsi obtenu (objets manufacturés : 700 000 ; restes botaniques et zoologiques : 200 000) constitue donc un important échantillonnage qui va nous aider à reconstituer l'évolution de l'occupation humaine dans cette vallée, pendant la longue séquence culturelle — environ 12 000 ans — que nos analyses ont mise en évidence (MacNeish, 1964).
