Les premiers mots de l’article que Marshall Sahlins publia dans The Journal of Modern History en 1993 signalent l’une des directions dans lesquelles l’écriture anthropologique s’est développée, en renforçant son lien avec l’histoire, en même temps qu’ils indiquent l’importance théorique de cette évolution: « Dans le vacarme suscité par la nouvelle anthropologie réflexive, qui exaltait l’impossibilité de comprendre de façon systématique un Autre insaisissable, une forme différente de prose ethnographique s’est développée, avec beaucoup plus de calme, presque sans que nous nous en rendions compte, et avec certainement beaucoup moins d’angoisse épistémologique. Il s’agit des nombreux travaux d’ethnographie historique qui cherchent à associer la connaissance que l’on peut avoir d’une communauté par l’expérience de terrain et le savoir sur son passé qu’apportent les archives. […] Mais seuls quelques chercheurs – notamment Barney Cohn, Jean Comaroff, John Comaroff et Terry Turner – se sont vraiment aperçus qu’une ethnographie prenant en compte le temps et la transformation est une autre manière d’aborder l’objet anthropologique et implique la possibilité de modifier les façons mêmes de penser la culture. » Ce dossier rassemble des recherches mettant en œuvre de tels renouvellements de l’écriture anthropologique par l’histoire, en même temps qu’il voudrait faire connaître quelques-uns des champs problématiques qu’ils ouvrent.
