In a paper read before the Geological Society of London, Prof. Hull proposes, as generally applicable to the whole of Great Britain and Ireland, a new classification of the Carboniferous rocks, as follows:

Experiments in the stream trough of the Physiographical Laboratory (1) of the Department of Geography at Cambridge had proceeded far enough, before the laboratory was closed for the remainder of the war, for some of the results to be described. These initial experiments were planned so as to isolate for study certain factors in stream action, such as the influence of load on gradient. When possible the behaviour of the little model streams was compared with that of full scale streams and rivers. This comparison seemed to throw some light on the development of certain features associated with flood plains, in particular, river terraces formed without change of sea-level.

A quarry face in County Antrim appears to show that the toe of a Tertiary lava flow has ploughed into the weathered top of the underlying lava and carried some of the weathered material forward.

Carbon isotope and magnetic polarity stratigraphic results from the Cambrian-Ordovician Boundary section at Xiaoyangqiao, near Dayangcha, Jilin Province, China, in comparison to a contemporaneous section at Black Mountain, Australia, indicate strata equivalent to major portions of the Australian sequence are either absent or are restricted to highly condensed intervals. These intervals are correlative with regressive sea level events identified in Australia and western North America, suggesting regional or eustatic sea level changes strongly influenced deposition of the Xiaoyangqiao sequence. These results also suggest the Xiaoyangqiao section is unfavourable as the site of the Cambrian-Ordovician Boundary Global Stratotype Section and Point.

The following particulars of a boring for water made at Puys, near Dieppe, in 1898 have been communicated to me by Messrs. Legrand and Sutcliff, and as they appear to indicate a succession of beds very similar to that occurring beneath Dover, the present seems a fitting occasion for placing on record a brief account of the boring.

In December, 1890, I had the good fortune to describe a new Sphasromid discovered by Mr. Thomas Jesson, B.A., F.G.S., in the Great Oolite of Northampton, which I named Cyclosphæroma trilobatum (see Geol. Mag., 1890, Dec. III, Vol. VII, pp. 529–533, PL XV). This specimen, which is redrawn on the accompanying PI. XIV (Fig- 1), is remarkable for its rounded outline, which induced me to apply to it the name Cyclospharoma.

Great was my joy when, in March last, I received from my friend Mr. E. J. Garwood, M.A., F.G.S., another Jurassic Isopod, of which both the intaglio and the, relievo had been obtained by him in the Purbeck beds near Aylesbury. This remarkably beautiful Crustacean proves to be a more perfectly preserved example of the same Sphseromid which I had described in 1890, from the Great Oolite of Northampton, and it needs but to compare Figs. 1 and 2 upon our Plate to perceive that in Fig. 1 the thoracic segments are much compressed together posteriorly, and that the hinder part of the telson is wanting; otherwise the resemblance between it and the newly-found and much more perfect example from the Purbeck beds of Aylesbury (PI. XIV, Fig. 2) is unmistakable.

A reference to the diagnosis of the genus (as given in Geol. Mag., 1890, p. 530) will show that it must now be amended in consequence of the discovery of the more complete specimen by Mr. Garwood.

The petrography of the greywackes is described, with special emphasis on rock and mineral grains indicative of provenance. Sedimentary structures are discussed, and current directions based on flute cast measurements are recorded. The stratigraphy and palaeontology of the Denbigh Grits, and the facies of other parts of the Wenlock in the Welsh area are also considered. It is concluded that the greywackes were derived from an area of Pre-Cambrian rocks near south-west Wales and that they were transported along the axes of subsiding troughs by turbidity currents.

Since the original description of Ceraterpeton by Huxley thirty years ago, several specimens have been referred to this interesting Stegocephalan genus, one even to the typical species, C. Galvani. No new examples from the typical locality, however, have hitherto been described, and our knowledge of the Irish form has thus remained without extension. Now, a nearly complete new skeleton has been discovered at Castlecomer, by J. G. Robertson, Esq., of Dublin, and I am indebted to him and to Professor Grenville Cole for the opportunity of studying it, and adding somewhat to the known characters of the animal.

The sense and amount of rotation of small garnet porphyroblasts is found to vary from place to place on a fold. By correlating this variation with a proposed mechanism of formation of the fold, a tentative profile for the fold at the time of garnet growth is constructed.

Bouldery outcrops of coarse-grained olivine-free lava, containing abundant orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene, mostly in glomerophyric aggregates, occur over a small area among the Tertiary to Recent volcanics of the Jos Plateau, Nigeria. This is the only rock of tholeiitic affinity in an otherwise completely alkaline volcanic province. Petrographically it does not greatly resemble tholeiitic occurrences reported from such provinces elsewhere, but that is believed to be due more to a relatively complex crystallization history than to any fundamentally different process of magma generation. It is not regarded as representing a tholeiitic parent for the alkaline lavas of the Jos Plateau region.
