Section 4 - Abuse and mistreatment


A certain amount of hazing is commonly part of the treatment for newcomers joining a sports team or fraternal society. This hazing may include some form of ceremony, and sometimes these get out of hand.

In this section we examine issues of being subjected to mistreatment and abuse that can have harmful effects on multiple levels: physical health, emotional well-being, social and family life, and attitudes to becoming a physician. How much humiliation should students endure before taking their complaints to higher authorities? When does ‘roughness’ turn into abuse that warrants professional discipline? What constitutes sexual harrassment and what can be done about it?
