Begriff der indogermanischen Sprachwissenschaft und Verzweigung des indogermanischen Sprachstammes.
1. Die idg. Sprachwissenschaft bildet, gleichwie die idg. Mythologie, einen Ausschnitt aus dei idg. Philologie, d. h. aus derjenigen Wissenschaft, welehe die Culturentwicklung (geschichtliche Bethätigung des Geistes) der idg. Völker von der Zeit ihrer Urgemeinsehaft bis auf unsere Zeit herab zu erforschen hat. Sie ist sonach eine historische Disciplin und hat die Aufgabe, die gesammte Entwicklung der idg. Sprachen von dem zu erschliessenden gemeinsamen Ausgangspunkte, der Zeit der idg. Urgemeinsehaft, bis heute zu erforschen. Ihre Einheit wird durch das, was die besondere Aufgabe des Sanskritisten, des Paläogräcisten und Neogräcisten, des Latinisten und Romanisten, des Keltisten u. s. w. ausmacht, nirgends und auf keine Weise durchbrochen, vielmehr gehen die indische Sprachwissenschaft, die altgriechische und neugriechische u. s. w. ohne Rest in der indogermanischen auf.
Wenn sich die sogen. ‘vergleichende Sprachforschung’ bis heute fast ausschliesslich mit den älteren Perioden der idg. Sprachen beschäftigt hat, so beruht dies auf einer aus dem Entwicklungsgange, den die Forschung nahm und nehmen musste, leicht zu erklärenden und durch das Mass menschlicher Einzelkraft gebotenen Arbeitstheilung. Diese wird voraussichtlich auch in Zukunft bestehen bleiben, aber sie bedingt keinen Gegensatz innerhalb der Wissenschaft selbst.
