Conclusion
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 13 July 2023
Summary
Radical consociationalism offers a model of peaceful, voluntary cooperation that is in stark contrast to the world of states – illegitimate, dangerous, unnecessary. Its critique of the state and the attractive alternative it offers points the way toward an appealing Christian political vision. In the Conclusion, I recap the argument of the book. Then, I go on to consider potential limits on the kind of critique in which I’ve engaged and to reflect on the question whether I’ve made excessive claims regarding the state or the consociational alternative. I consider the distinctively political role of the church both today and in the kind of future I envision. I conclude by arguing that moving beyond the state is a live possibility
