Summary

This chapter compares different approaches to realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through access to information and learning, especially by people who are blind, visually impaired, or otherwise print-disabled (VIPs). The Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons who are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print-Disabled (Marrakesh Treaty, the VIP Treaty) anticipates partnership among contracting states, authorized entities and the WIPO International Bureau. Equally, the WIPO Accessible Books Consortium (ABC) anticipates and indeed works on the basis of public-private partnerships, with the stated objective of complementing the entry into force of the Marrakesh Treaty. This chapter analyses how well the Marrakesh Treaty and the WIPO ABC working separately or together contribute towards the fulfilment of the SDGs.
