Summary
Man has too long forgotten that the earth was given to him for usufruct alone, not for consumption, still less for profligate waste.
George Perkins MarshThe beginning
Anthropogenic transformation of the physical environment changes processes and landforms. Large-scale alteration of the landscape started about 10 000 years BP, with the beginning of agriculture which led to the destruction and replacement of natural vegetation. Additional demands for construction, urbanisation and shipbuilding made further inroads into the forests. As natural vegetation was depleted, many areas were subjected to a changing hydrology and geomorphology.
