Summary

Folios 136r–141r contain documents relating to property in Gutter Lane. The red-ink heading on f. 136r reads “Goturlane by Hillys”, and thereafter the verso pages have the heading “Goter” and the recto pages “lane”.

A different hand has taken over here. One must note that not a single one of these documents is accompanied by a note of the date of its enrolment. One also notes that the sequence in which documents are presented is in reverse order to that of the preceding sections: here the most recent document is presented first and the scribe has then worked backwards from that (although not all is in strict chronological order).

The testament of John Hilles [6 September 1430]

In the name of God, Amen. On the sixth day of September ad 1430 and the ninth year of the reign of King Henry VI, I, John Hilles, citizen and goldsmith of London, of sound mind and good memory, make, ordain and constitute this my present testament concerning my lands and tenements with all their appurtenances in the parish of St Vedast in Gutter Lane and Keroun Lane, and in the parishes of St Michael Wood Street and St Peter Cheap, in London, and St Dunstan in Fleet Street in the suburbs of London, in this manner: Firstly, I bequeath my soul to the almighty God my creator, and to the blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, and my body to be buried in the aforesaid church of St Michael Wood Street. Item, whereas John Biernes, John Pake, Stephen Collee, and John Walshe the younger, citizens and goldsmiths of London, granted and confirmed to Thomas Senecle, citizen and goldsmith of London, by a document issued at London on the last day of October in the eighth year of the reign of King Henry VI [31 October 1429], fifty-two shillings sterling to be received annually and weekly by the said Thomas and his assigns until the end of the lifetime of the same Thomas, this at the nomination of Reginald Barantyn of Chalgrave in Oxfordshire and raised from those nineteen messuages of mine with their appurtenances situated in the parish of St Vedast London which used to be those of Bartholomew Byllyndon, late citizen and goldsmith of London.
