Summary

The late 1880s brought a concatenation of events in the world of books that identifies these few years as a period of especially rapid and fundamental change. People were well aware of it at the time, and wrote about it explicitly. Henry Wheatley was among the most popular. By the late nineteenth century many of the features familiar in the main catalogues of major libraries were established.
