Summary
I did most of the research for this book while teaching at the University of Dar es Salaam, where I was fortunate to have colleagues and students who helped me to enjoy and understand Tanganyika in its first exciting years of independence. I have written the book at Cambridge while working so closely with John Lonsdale that I do not know which of my ideas are really his. Many scholars have generously allowed me to use their unpublished work. Andrew Roberts made valuable comments on a draft of this book. I am grateful to all those who have helped me.
