Summary

Legacy and Challenge of Marcus Garvey for the Commonwealth

Kingston, Jamaica

May 1989

Speaking at the launch of a new book on the life and work of Marcus Garvey by two Caribbean scholars, Rupert Lewis and Patrick Bryan, Garvey: His Work and Impact, he considers Garvey's contribution to the development of a new political agenda at the turn of the 20th century …

The publication of this book provides an occasion for reflection and taking stock of Marcus Garvey's monumental contribution to developing a new political agenda for the twentieth century: the agenda of decolonisation, of enfranchisement and independence, of economic development of the Third World and the restructuring of global relationships on a more equitable basis, and above all, of the place of Africa and the African Diaspora within the concept of a common humanity. In joining to pay tribute to this great son of the African Diaspora and of the Third World, I would like to speak also about his legacy and challenge to the Commonwealth.

Marcus Garvey was a son of Jamaica, a nation that has played a vital role in the chronicle of decolonisation and struggle for independence. Jamaica has been a fertile crucible of Third World leadership and in the efforts of the Third World to build a more equitable global society. In the person of Marcus Garvey, Jamaica gave the world a visionary, a philosopher, a political activist and a liberator of world rank, whose ideas have profoundly influenced the Third World and the development of an interdependent global society.
