Summary
When children are anxious, they are in an altered state. The altered state creates both opportunity and vulnerability by making a child more sensitive and responsive to both positive and negative comments or influences. What we say to them while in this state can have a profound effect upon them. We should therefore choose our words very carefully and proscriptively. Comments that can be perceived negatively can have a disproportionate influence.
