ANCRAM

Lady Harriet Ancram (nee Lady Harriet Scott) married William, 6th Marquess of Lothian and Earl of Ancram (1763–1824), in 1806; she was his second wife. The Ancram family owned Newbattle Abbey. Lady Harriet was a daughter of Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of BUCCLEUCH. Her father and husband were both Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh – the Duke of Buccleuch was its President 1783–1812. John Gunn taught the daughters of the Duke of Buccleuch. (See also COURTOWN).

ASHE

Mary Ashe (1774–1843), principal singer at the concerts in Bath, directed by her singing teacher Venanzio Rauzzini. Married to the prominent flautist Andrew Ashe (1759–1838), first flute at the Italian Opera, who took over directing the Bath concerts in 1810 on the death of Rauzzini.

ATHERLY (ATHERLEY)

Luisa Atherley (1768–1819), fourth daughter of William Kerr, 5th Marchioness of Lothian. Married Arthur Atherley (sometime MP for Southampton) in 1793.

BELHAVEN

William Hamilton, 7th Lord Belhaven (1765–1814). ‘Miss Hamilton, my Lord's Sister’ is one of Lord Belhaven's sisters. By April 1809 only four (of five) were alive – Jean, Betty, Susannah, and Euphame.

BIRCHALL

Robert Birchall (1750–1819), London music seller and publisher. Managed the Ancient Concerts and many benefit concerts in London.

BROADWOOD

Piano manufacturer trading as John Broadwood & Son from 1795. Broadwood instruments were used by many prominent musicians well into the nineteenth century. See also STODART.

BUCCLEUCH (BUCCLEUGH)

Lady Elizabeth Montagu (1743–1827) married Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, in 1767. Musical enthusiast who amassed a significant collection. Gunn refers to teaching the three daughters of Buccleuch, but there were four: Lady Elizabeth Scott (d.1837), Lady Mary Scott (1769–1823; see COURTOWN), Lady Caroline Scott (1774–1854), and Lady Harriet Scott (1780–1833; see ANCRAM).

CATHCART

General William Schaw Cathcart (1755–1843). Representative peer for Scotland 1788; Vice-Admiral for Scotland 1795; commanded the army in Scotland till 1807; Viscount 1807; General 1812; buried Paisley Abbey. Married Elizabeth Elliott in 1779.
