Summary
Der mensch, wenn er thieren nachstellt, kann dazu des thieres selbst nicht entrathen. dem jäger gesellt sich sein hund, um das wild aufzuspüren, behend zu erreichen und festzuhalten; es ist als gehe kein geschlecht zu grunde, gegen das nicht aus seiner eignen mitte helfer dem feinde auferstehn. Unser alterthum pflag aber nicht allein hunde abzurichten, sondern auch raubvögel zu zähmen, die es in die luft auffliegen und nach der beute stossen liess. erst dadurch erreichte die jagdlust ihren gipfel.
Es kann keine edlere jagd ersonnen werden, als wenn der jäger ausreitend durch die wälder den falken auf der hand hielt und den hund vor sich laufen hatte; welches thier auf dem feld oder in den lüften mochte ihnen entrinnen? durch das pulver ist wie der krieg grausamer und unmenschlicher, die jagd tückisch und weniger poetisch geworden: ein feiger schuss erlegt das stolzeste thier aus weiter ferne, das gegen speer und pfeil noch seine letzte kraft aufbieten konnte. Wie wissen die dichter den kühnen flug des falken und seine leuchtenden augen in ihre bilder und gleichnisse zu ziehen:
sie liez ir ougen umbe gân
als der valke ûf dem aste;
ze linde noch ze vaste
hætens beide ir weide. Trist. 11000.
