Summary

Diseases in the oral cavity affecting the periodontal connective tissue are summarized under the term periodontal diseases. Periodontitis, the most relevant periodontal disease, is caused by a bacterial inflammation of the tissues supporting the teeth. Periodontal diseases are highly prevalent. Relevant risk factors are diabetes, smoking and stress.
