A 30-year-old woman is admitted as an emergency with a two-hour history of severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Her last period was 3 weeks ago and she is not using contraception. On examination she is tachycardic but her temperature and BP are normal. Her abdomen is very tender and there is a tender mass palpable in the left adnexa on bimanual vaginal examination.
