Summary
El hijo de la novia es el segundo largometraje de Juan José Campanella hecho en la Argentina. A diferencia de Nueve reinas, El hijo de la novia, aunque también tremendamente exitosa en términos de audiencia, no obtuvo la misma aprobación por parte de la crítica, que por ejemplo en tono ligeramente despectivo ha comparado a Campanella con Eliseo Subiela en el cultivo de “la comedia dramática costumbrista y sentimental de acento italiano cuyos protagonistas son porteños de clase media y mediana edad que aspiran a repre sentar arquetipos criollos” (Quintín 111).
Campanella ha defendido el valor de representatividad del sujeto de clase/ objeto de representación elegido, la clase media, consciente de que esa elección lo aleja no sólo del cine argentino contemporáneo sino también del cine latinoamericano en general (Entrevista, NuReel), y es en relación a esa representatividad de la clase media que ha definido el significado simbólico de su película, la “segunda lectura” que ésta entrañaría:
My film is more about the middle class, but it shows a person from the middle class who could have sold out, but in the end he turns around and says: “I’ll stay here” […]. The political and economic situation in Argentina is present in the film, but it is present in a more second layer, second reading. We did what we did to make the restaurant a symbol of the country: the restaurant that we inherited from our elders, and that we sort of sold out, and now we have to start from the broken down cafe across the street. (Entrevista, NuReel) En lo que sigue, me interesa profundizar en el análisis de la dimensión alegórica que Campanella sugiere para su película—similar, como puede verse, a la que proyecta Nueve reinas y que puede resumirse en la concatenación inmigración–nación–herencia–entrega al capital transnacional—en relación a la demanda de justicia y a la necesidad de restitución simbólica que estructuran formal y temáticamente el film. La demanda de justicia y necesidad de retribución simbólica se resuelven, también como en Nueve reinas, a través de una operación construida en torno a la simulación y que tiene a la familia como espacio comunitario de realización, con la significativa diferencia, como veremos, de que la película toda puede conceptualizarse, literalmente, como una simulación.
