‘Modern Man’ can be used to distinguish the European of roughly the seventeenth century from the ‘Enlightened Man’ of the eighteenth; however, we shall treat the two as synonymous insofar as it was ‘Modern’ man who took the crucial steps towards ‘Enlightenment’. If we ask, ‘Enlightenment from what?’, the ostensible answer will be ‘From the Middle Ages’, while understood – at least by the most ‘enlightened’ – will be ‘From Christianity’.
