1 - Created Diversity

Summary
I emphasize that the approach to politics I take in the book is liberal because designed to respond to the reality of created diversity. This involves openness to varied ways of flourishing and to social experimentation. I articulate a trinitarian understanding of human diversity and underscore its links with a liberal political vision. I emphasize the role of association in a society serious about human diversity. However, I maintain, the affirmation of association I’ve offered provides no basis for endorsing nationalism. At the same time, the rejection of nationalism need not involve a denigration of the value of place. And a recognition of this value, in turn, is quite compatible with a cosmopolitan recognition of ourselves as linked with people across cultures and across our world.
