Summary

This chapter covers the obscure backdrop to the dynasty’s subsequent, much greater days. Whilst the first century of the family’s existence is so shadowy that little can be done to reconstruct it, thereafter it is possible to begin to trace the dynasty’s growth in importance as a regional power in medieval Champagne, and the start of its involvement much further afield as a part of the crusading movement.
