Summary

N.B. The brief descriptions here are based on the full physical descriptions preceding each Heft in the German edition. All Hefte are understood to be in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin—Preussischer Kulturbesitz, except for Hefte 1 and 95, which are in the Beethoven-Haus, Bonn.

Virtually all of the Hefte, except for 1 and 95, bear either annotations or an inserted slip by Anton Schindler or Alexander Wheelock Thayer. Most Hefte also contain librarians’ cataloging numbers, often in ink.

Many of these originally blank booklets have paper shields pasted on to the exterior of the front covers (probably standard at the time of manufacture) for the purchaser to write a title, date, or some other identifier.

Heft 9 (March 11, 1820 – March 19, 1820): Original blue marbled cardboard cover. 93 Blätter; Schindler's numbering lacks 77; all the pages contain writing. Format 18.8 x 11.9 cm.

Heft 10 (March 20, 1820 – ca. April 1, 1820): Original blue marbled cardboard cover. 84 Blätter; all the pages contain writing except Blatt 77r. Between Blätter 70 and 71 is the edge of a Blatt that has been cut out. Format 18.9 x 11.8 cm.

Heft 11 (April 1, 1820 – April 14, 1820): Original blue marbled cardboard cover. 85 Blätter; except for Blätter 27v and 28r, all the pages (including inside the covers) contain writing. Format 18.8 x 11.8 cm.

Heft 12 (ca. April 18, 1820 – April 29, 1820): Original blue marbled cardboard cover. 76 Blätter; except for Blätter 17v and 30v, all the pages (including inside the covers) contain writing. Paper shield pasted to front cover: “April, 1820” in Beethoven's hand. Format 19 x 12 cm.

Heft 13 (May 1 or 2, 1820 – May 10, 1820): Original blue marbled cardboard cover. 54 Blätter; Schindler's foliation jumps from Blatt 28 to Blatt 39; all the pages (including inside the covers) contain writing. Paper shield pasted to front cover: “+ Month of May, 1820” in Beethoven's hand. Format 19 x 12 cm.

Heft 14 (ca. June 2, 1820 – ca. July 4, 1820): Original blue marbled cardboard cover. 92 Blätter; all the pages (including inside the covers) contain writing. Format 19.2 x 11.8 cm.
