L'entre-deux-langues, j'y suis comme écrivain depuis trente ans, dans un tangage-langage (pour reprendre le titre de Michel Leiris) qui détermine jusqu'à mes résidences géographiques. Un aller-retour entre France et Algérie et vice-versa, sans savoir finalement où est l'aller, vers où aller, vers quelle langue, vers quelle source, vers quels arrières, sans non plus savoir où se situerait le retour, retour certes impossible et mythique de l'émigrée, mais aussi vers un passé origine, vers une langue origine d'une mère sourde et muette […] Ce tangage entre deux langages, s'inscrivant dans mon espace de vie, il me semble en avoir établi un premier bilan dans un premier livre ouvertement autobiographique: L'Amour, la fantasia.

(As a writer, I have found myself placed between two languages for the past thirty years, in a ‘pitching of language’ (to use Michel Leiris's title) which has determined everything, even where I live. Going backwards and forwards between France and Algeria and vice versa, ending up not knowing which way is forward, where to go to, towards which language, which source, which way is backward, and without knowing either where to return to – a return which is anyway impossible, mythical, for all emigrants – but also a return towards one's past, towards one's mother-tongue, the tongue of a deaf and dumb mother […] This pitching between two languages, inscribed on the very space of my life, is something I think I made a preliminary assessment of in my first openly autobiographical book: Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade.)

En somme, ‘je ne vous ai pas tout dit’, un peu comme dans une confession dans la tradition chrétienne. Je n'ai jamais été au confessionnal, mais il y a quelque chose de la confession dans le texte autobiographique. Une fois que dans une confession vous avez avoué quelque chose, cela ne peut pas être repris, c'est trop tard. Le texte autobiographique est irréversible dans ce sens. Ainsi l'autobiographie a un déroulement infini.
