We have been monitoring some well-known bright blazars with short LOFAR observations since February 2013 with fortnightly cadence using the full available bandwidth of the High Band Antennas (i.e., 48 MHz centred at 226 MHz). The sources were chosen to be bright at low frequencies and to exhibit strong GHz-frequency radio variability on timescales of weeks to years. None of the five objects selected have been monitored previously in the MHz band. Here we report some preliminary results on flux variability obtained so far with LOFAR. These observations are scientifically valuable in their own right and also act as a proof of principle for broader, higher-cadence monitoring of the extragalactic sky with LOFAR and possibly SKA.

Jets from accreting black holes appear remarkably similar over eight orders of magnitude in black hole mass, with more massive black holes generally launching more powerful jets. For example, there is an observed correlation, termed the fundamental plane of black hole accretion, between black hole mass, radio luminosity, and X-ray luminosity. Here, we probe the high-mass tail (108–109M⊙) of the accreting black hole distribution with BL Lac objects. We build SEDs for hundreds of SDSS BL Lacs, and we use these SEDs to test the blazar sequence, a proposed anti-correlation between jet power and peak frequency. We then show our BL Lacs fit on the fundamental plane, supporting the non-linear scaling of jet radiation with black hole mass. The subset of BL Lacs considered here compose the largest sample yet used in the above types of studies, reducing potential selection effects and biases.

We obtained the first spectral predictions from a simulation of the Galactic Center to include radiative processes internally. We performed simulations with and without cooling, with and without spin, and for different initial configurations of the magnetic field, in order to test the effect on jet launching and inner accretion disk characteristics. By exploring parameter space, we will attempt to place new constraints on the controversial question about the presence or not of a jet from Sgr A*, as well as study jet launching in general. We have shown that, as expected, the spin of the BH affects the structure of the jet. The presence of cooling also strongly influences the inner structure of the accretion disk and therefore affects jet launching. These results show that radiative cooling is not negligible, as is usually assumed for the very underluminous supermassive BH, Sgr A*. On the contrary, the inclusion of cooling has a very visible influence on the accretion disk. Furthermore it creates an important difference in the resulting spectra.

Cosmos++ (Anninos et al. 2005) is one of the first fully relativistic magneto-hydro-dynamical (MHD) codes that can self-consistently account for radiative cooling, in the optically thin regime. As the code combines a total energy conservation formulation with a radiative cooling function, we have now the possibility to produce spectra energy density from these simulations and compare them to data. In this paper, we present preliminary results of spectra calculated using the same cooling functions from 2D Cosmos++ simulations of the accretion flow around Sgr A*. The simulation parameters were designed to roughly reproduce Sgr A*'s behavior at very low (10−8–10−7 M⊙/yr) accretion rate, but only via spectra can we test that this has been achieved.

Jets can contribute to the spectra of X-ray binaries (XRBs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the radio through the γ-ray bands; thus understanding their physics is key for interpreting the data. Recent VLBI observations suggest that jets begin to accelerate particles into power-law distributions at a point offset from the black hole by ~104rg, possibly via a collimation shock. Spectral fitting of simultaneous, broadband data from both XRBs and AGN in jet-dominated states corroborates this picture. From a magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) point of view, it is natural to associate the onset of particle acceleration with the final MHD critical point in the flow, the modified fast point (MFP), where causal contact with the upstream flow is broken. In this way a standing disruption like a shock can form, and this location might vary with the physical parameters of the jet. In order to study this issue, we have used the self-similar formalism of Vlahakis & Königl (2003, hereafter VK03) to simplify the MHD equations and to derive solutions that cross the critical points. We have found a new parameter space of solutions that cross the MFP at a finite height above the disc and are relativistic, spanning a range of Lorentz factors Γ ≤ 10 (Polko et al. 2010). We present these results, as well as preliminary work connecting the relativistic formalism to the non-relativistic conditions with gravity near the base of the jets.

GRS 1915+105 is a very peculiar black hole binary that exhibits accretion-related states that are not observed in any other stellar-mass black hole system. One of these states, however – referred to as the plateau state – may be related to the canonical hard state of black hole X-ray binaries. Both the plateau and hard state are associated with steady, relatively lower X-ray emission and flat/inverted radio emission, that is sometimes resolved into compact, self-absorbed jets. To investigate the relationship between the plateau and the hard state, we fit two multi-wavelength observations using a steady-state outflow-dominated model, developed for hard state black hole binaries. The data sets consist of quasi-simultaneous observations in radio, near-infrared and X-ray bands. Interestingly, we find both significant differences between the two plateau states, as well as between the best-fit model parameters and those representative of the hard state. We discuss our interpretation of these results, and the possible implications for GRS 1915+105's relationship to canonical black hole candidates.

Relationships between the X-ray and radio behavior of black hole X-ray binaries during outbursts have established a fundamental coupling between the accretion disks and radio jets in these systems. I begin by reviewing the prevailing paradigm for this disk-jet coupling, also highlighting what we know about similarities and differences with neutron star and white dwarf binaries. Until recently, this paradigm had not been directly tested with dedicated high-angular resolution radio imaging over entire outbursts. Moreover, such high-resolution monitoring campaigns had not previously targetted outbursts in which the compact object was either a neutron star or a white dwarf. To address this issue, we have embarked on the Jet Acceleration and Collimation Probe Of Transient X-Ray Binaries (JACPOT XRB) project, which aims to use high angular resolution observations to compare disk-jet coupling across the stellar mass scale, with the goal of probing the importance of the depth of the gravitational potential well, the stellar surface and the stellar magnetic field, on jet formation. Our team has recently concluded its first monitoring series, including (E)VLA, VLBA, X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations of entire outbursts of the black hole candidate H 1743-322, the neutron star system Aquila X-1, and the white dwarf system SS Cyg. Here I present preliminary results from this work, largely confirming the current paradigm, but highlighting some intriguing new behavior, and suggesting a possible difference in the jet formation process between neutron star and black hole systems.

Correlations between the radio and X-ray bands in the hard state of black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs) have led to the discovery of the Fundamental Plane of black hole accretion, linking accretion-driven radiative attributes to black hole mass. Although this discovery has led to new constraints on radiative efficiencies, there is still significant degeneracy in terms of understanding the governing physics. I present several new results exploring the processes driving the Fundamental Plane over the black hole mass range. These include the first ever homogeneous fits of sources at approximately the same Eddington luminosity but millions of times different in mass, which I focus on for this proceeding article.

We present results of recent observations and theoretical modeling of data from black holes accreting at very low luminosities (L/LEdd ≲ 10−8). We discuss our newly developed time-dependent model for episodic ejection of relativistic plasma within a jet framework, and a successful application of this model to describe the origin of radio flares seen in Sgr A*, the Galactic center black hole. Both the observed time lags and size-frequency relationships are reproduced well by the model. We also discuss results from new Spitzer data of the stellar black hole X-ray binary system A0620–00. Complemented by long term SMARTS monitoring, these observations indicate that once the contribution from the accretion disk and the donor star are properly included, the residual mid-IR spectral energy distribution of A0620–00 is quite flat and consistent with a non-thermal origin. The results above suggest that a significant fraction of the observed spectral energy distribution originating near black holes accreting at low luminosities could result from a mildly relativistic outflow. The fact that these outflows are seen in both stellar-mass black holes as well as in supermassive black holes at the heart of AGNs strengthens our expectation that accretion and jet physics scales with mass.

Of all possible black hole sources, the event horizon of the Galactic Center black hole, Sgr A*, subtends the largest angular scale on the sky. It is therefore a prime candidate to study and image plasma processes in strong gravity and it even allows imaging of the shadow cast by the event horizon. Recent mm-wave VLBI and radio timing observations as well as numerical GRMHD simulations now have provided several breakthroughs that put Sgr A* back into the focus. Firstly, VLBI observations have now measured the intrinsic size of Sgr A* at multiple frequencies, where the highest frequency measurements have approached the scale of the black hole shadow. Moreover, measurements of the radio variability show a clear time lag between 22 GHz and 43 GHz. The combination of size and timing measurements, allows one to actually measure the flow speed and direction of magnetized plasma at some tens of Schwarzschild radii. This data strongly support a moderately relativistic outflow, consistent with an accelerating jet model. This is compared to recent GRMHD simulation that show the presence of a moderately relativistic outflow coupled to an accretion flow Sgr A*. Further VLBI and timing observations coupled to simulations have the potential to map out the velocity profile from 5-40 Schwarzschild radii and to provide a first glimpse at the appearance of a jet-disk system near the event horizon. Future submm-VLBI experiments would even be able to directly image those processes in strong gravity and directly confirm the presence of an event horizon.

Most accretion-powered relativistic jet sources in our Galaxy are transient X-ray binaries (XBs). Efforts to coordinate multiwavelength observations of these objects have improved dramatically over the last decade. Now the challenge is to interpret broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of XBs that are well sampled in both wavelength and time. Here we focus on the evolution of the jet in their broadband spectra. Some of the most densely sampled broadband SEDs of a neutron star transient (IGR J00291+5934) are used to constrain the optically thick–thin break in the jet spectrum. For the black hole transient XTE J1550-564, infrared – X-ray correlations, evolution of broadband spectra and timing signatures indicate that synchrotron emission from the jet likely dominates the X-ray power law at low luminosities (~(2 × 10−4 − 2 × 10−3) LEdd) during the hard state outburst decline.

Outflowing jets are observed in a variety of astronomical objects such as accreting compact objects from X-ray binaries (XRBs) to active galactic nuclei (AGN), as well as at stellar birth and death. Yet we still do not know exactly what they are comprised of, why and how they form, or their exact relationship with the accretion flow. In this talk I focus on jets in black hole systems, which provide the ideal test population for studying the relationship between inflow and outflow over an extreme range in mass and accretion rate.

I present several recent results from coordinated multi-wavelength studies of low-luminosity sources. These results not only support similar trends in weakly accreting black hole behavior across the mass scale, but also suggest that the same underlying physical model can explain their broadband spectra. I discuss how comparisons between small- and large-scale systems are revealing new information about the regions nearest the black hole, providing clues about the creation of these weakest of jets. Furthermore, comparisons between our Galactic center nucleus Sgr A* and other sources at slightly higher accretion rates can elucidate the processes which drive central activity, and pave the way for new tests with upcoming instruments.

At the center of the Milky Way lurks a unique compact nonthermal radio source, Sgr A*. It is thought to be powered by a 2.6 × 106 solar mass black hole that is accreting the stellar winds from the numerous early-type stars that exist in the central parsec. However, until recent high resolution Chandra observations, Sgr A* had never been unequivocably detected at wavelengths shorter than the sub-millimeter. We present a spherical accretion model which is consistent with both the flux and steep spectral shape of the X-ray emission from Sgr A*.

We show and discuss results and prospects of high-resolution imaging of the supermassive black hole candidate Sgr A*. We also briefly review the latest observational and theoretical progress for this source. The latest millimeter-VLBI observations show compact radio emission from within a region of about 15 Schwarzschild radii. This compact component is most likely responsible for the so-called sub-mm bump in the spectrum and perhaps even for the recently discovered circular polarization discovered up to 43 GHz and some X-ray emission through synchrotron self-Compton emission. Most importantly, however, the sub-mm emission from Sgr A* opens the door to observe, for the first time, the event horizon of a black hole directly with VLBI at sub-mm wavelengths.

The recent detection of a γ-ray flux from the direction of the Galactic center by EGRET on the Compton GRO raises the question of whether this is a point source (possibly coincident with the massive black hole candidate Sgr A∗) or a diffuse emitter. Using the latest experimental particle physics data and theoretical models, we have examined in detail the γ-ray spectrum produced by synchrotron, inverse Compton scattering and mesonic decay resulting from the interaction of relativistic protons with hydrogen accreting onto a point-like object. Such a distribution of high-energy baryons may be expected to form within an accretion shock as the inflowing gas becomes supersonic. This scenario is motivated by hydrodynamic studies of Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto Sgr A∗, which indicate that many of its radiative characteristics may ultimately be associated with energy liberated as this plasma descends down into the deep potential well. Earlier attempts at analyzing this process concluded that the EGRET data are inconsistent with a massive point-like object (Mastichiadis & Ozernoy, 1994). Our results demonstrate that a more careful treatment of the physics of p-p scattering suggests that a ~ 106M⊙ black hole may be contributing to this high-energy emission.
