Summary
A number of letters of Timothy Aelurus survive in Syriac. These reveal Timothy in a more pastoral and less polemical light, as these letters are generally written to support miaphysites throughout the Roman Empire in the midst of not only their struggles to maintain their faith but also their challenges in creating a miaphysite church. One such letter was written to Claudianus. Identified as an abbot and priest, nothing more is known about him. The heading of letter (which is not part of the original letter) claims that it was written in exile from Chersonesus. If that is correct, then is dated to 464/5–475. Toward the end of the letter Timothy mentions a small treatise he wrote when summoned by the emperor (presumably to Constantinople). If this happened under Emperor Leo, it supports the dating of 464/5–475. But such a summons is otherwise unattested. If the summoning refers to when Emperor Basiliscus called Timothy to Constantinople in 475, the letter must have actually been written after his exile in Chersonesus and thus must be one of his last extant works before his death in 477. No other evidence helps to decide the issue.

Summary
Two works against the Council of Chalcedon are attributed to Timothy Aelurus. The first survives fully in Armenian and as a synopsis in a Syriac epitome; its title in Armenian is very long, so today scholars call it Against the Dyophysites or On the Unity of Christ. Timothy includes over three hundred quotations not only from authors whose views he opposed but also from works cited in support of his understanding of Christology. He also refutes the Definition of Faith promulgated by the Council of Chalcedon and Leo of Rome’s Tome to Flavian of Constantinople in this work, which was endorsed by the Definition. The second work survives in a single Syriac manuscript, which dates to before 562. It consists of four parts: (1) a section-by-section refutation of the Chalcedonian Definition, (2) a section-by-section refutation of the Tome of Leo, (3) a florilegium of quotations from the acts of Ephesus II chosen to demonstrate the bishops’ stunning change of mind at Chalcedon, and (4) a eulogy for Dioscorus of Alexandria along with an exhortation to persevere in the faith.

Summary
The Syriac-speaking Christians of Syria and Mesopotamia made one of the most important contributions to the intellectual efflorescence centred in 'Abbasid Baghdad which became the chief glory of medieval Islam. The first century and a half of the 'Abbasid dynasty saw the momentous movement of translation of Greek, Syriac and Persian works into Arabic and the transference of Hellenistic lore to the followers of the Arabian Prophet. In the years following the founding of Baghdad the major philosophical works of Aristotle and the Neoplatonic commentators, the chief medical writings of Hippocrates and Galen, the mathematical works of Euclid and the geographical work of Ptolemy became available to readers of Arabic. In this movement it was the Syrians who were the chief mediators.
To understand how Syriac came to exercise its important influence on Arabic literature it is necessary to have a clear picture of the development of Syriac literature itself. This development may be divided into three stages. The first period extended from the pre-Christian era to the eighth century A.D., and is represented by the few surviving pagan works (e.g. the Story of Ahīqār and the writings of Māra bar Seraphion and Bāba of Harrān), and a far more extensive Christian literature. It commences with the Bible in successive versions (Monophysite versions, Malkite versions and Nestorian versions), commonly called Peshitta (“simple”), for the Syrian church seems never to have been satisfied with its translations.

The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention of scholars to the existence of a hitherto unknown Arabic poem concerned with the subject of Joseph and his brethren, which was discovered in 1972 in an uncatalogued manuscript in the possession of the Department of Semitic Studies of the University of Leeds.
