Patients with substance use disorders (SUD) have higher alexithymia levels and present frequently suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide (SA) [1,2]. Beside, alexithymia has been related to suicidal behaviors in several psychiatric disorders[3]. Although, there are some studies on alexithymia and suicidality in SUD patients, to our knowledge there are no studies on this issue in Spanish population.

To compare the alexithymia levels in SUD patients with and without SI and SA in an outpatient addiction treatment center in Spain.

This is a cross-sectional study performed on 110 patients (74.3%males; mean age 43.6±14.5years old) for whom we had information from the Toronto Alexithymia Scale(TAS-20) and the presence or not of lifetime SI and SA.

Lifetime SI and SA were present in 55.5% and 35.5% of the sample respectively. The mean score of TAS-20, difficulties identifying feelings (DIF), difficulties describing feelings (DDT), and externally-oriented thinking(EOT) were 57.2±13.3, 20.0±7.0, 14.7±4.5, and 22.5±4.5 respectively.

SI and SA may be related to alexithymia levels. Hence, alexithymia should be further analyzed in SUD patients in longitudinal studies in order to analyze the bilateral association with suicidal spectrum behaviors. Insomnia has been related to a more severe substance use disorder presentation (1). There are few longitudinal studies in outpatients center for SUD treatment that evaluate how insomnia impacts on relapses.

To analyze how insomnia impacts on the time of the first substance relapse in SUD outpatients after the onset of addiction treatment.

This is a one-year follow-up study performed on 116 patients (73.3% males; mean age 43.4±14.3) for whom we had information from baseline insomnia and the time for the first relapse. A Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed. This is part of a greater research on Alexithymia in SUD in a longitudinal study.

The initial sample consisted of 116 patients, information on relapses was available for 113 patients. The main substances used at baseline were alcohol (62.1%), cocaine (56.0%), cannabis (42.2%), and opiates (30.2%).

It is important to evaluate insomnia at the onset of addiction treatment because insomnia may be related to earlier relapses. Until now, no reliable biological markers of risk and relapse in substance-dependent patients have been identified. The yawn-inducing test with apomorphine has been proposed as a marker of the functional status of the dopaminergic system and therefore a predictor of suffering an addiction or predisposition to relapse.

Studying the safety and efficacy of apomorphine test as a predictor of relapse in intranasal cocaine dependent, diagnosed according to DSM-IV-TR.

We performed the test of apomorphine at the beginning (day 1) and end (day 11/12) of a detoxification program in 33 patients (29 men). The majority of patients relapsed after 22 weeks of follow up (87% relapse). The average yawns in the sample were 10.9 ± 9.3 in the initial test (Apo 1) and 10.2 ± 10.2 in the final test (Apo 2). The 42% of patients relapsed early (before 4 weeks) and 45% late (afther 4 weeks). 58% of the sample (N = 19), which did not fall belatedly filled an average of 8.0 yawns in Apo1 and 8.1 on Apo2 and 42% who did so early (N = 14), 14,8 in Apo1 and 14.6 in Apo2. Therefore there are an increased number of yawns in patients with early relapse. No important side effects were reported.

Patients with early relapse have a higher number of yawns that those falling late or abstainers The apomorphine test is a safe test and it is a readily applicable tool in clinical practice and may be a biological marker of risk.

Describe the prevalence and characteristics of psychotic symptoms in the context of cocaine injection use in a harm reduction program.

To find associations between intravenous cocaine use and other drug use in cocaine dependent patients suffering from cocaine induced psychosis (CIP). Cannabis was found to be a risk factor for developing CIP in non-intravenous cocaine dependence.

During a period of 6 months professionals from our Outpatient Drug Clinic completed a confidential questionnaire to describe the adverse clinical effects following cocaine injection. It included age, gender, ethnic group, daily consumption rate and other drugs used in the last 30 days.

Survey was achieved with a sample of 75 Caucasians patients, 69 men and 6 women with an average age of 32 years old. Seventeen percent (13/75) had psychotic symptoms, of which 84% (11/13) had hallucinations (visuals 4/11, auditive 7/11 and kinaesthetic 2/11), 15% (2/13) illusions.

Eighteen percent (14/75) had stereotypy movements and 3% (2/75) had aggressive behaviour. Drugs used by CIP patients, the previous 30 days were: 61% (8/13) cannabis, 31% (4/13) opiates and 15% (2/13) alcohol.

Intravenous cocaine use produced acute psychotic symptoms in 17% of our patients, of which 61% used cannabis. Despite the ethical and practical implications of this type of study, it is necessary to do more observational studies with bigger surveys to conclude these results with statistically significance.

Cocaine consumption can induce transient psychotic symptoms, expressed as paranoia or hallucinations. Cocaine induced psychosis (CIP) is common but not developed in all cases.

To describe the Risk Factors for developing cocaine-induced psychosis in cocaine dependent patients, according DSM-IV-TR criteria.

This is the first European study about the relationship of CIP with consumption pattern variables and personality disorders, we evaluated 220 cocaine dependents over 18 years, 80'5% males, mean age 33.9 years (SD = 7.6). Patients were recluted from an outpatient clinic department and subsequently systematically evaluated using SCID I and SCID II interviews for comorbidity disorders, and a clinical-based systematic psychotic symptoms form.

A high proportion of cocaine dependent patients reported psychotic symptoms (51.8%) under influence of cocaine. The most frequent reported psychotic symptoms were paranoid beliefs and suspiciousness (42.4%). After a logistic regression analysis we found that a model consisted of high cocaine consumption (mean of 12.01 grams per week), cannabis dependence history and to use intranasal or smoked rout of administration had a sensitivity of 63.2% and a specificity of 70.2%.

We conclude that is relevant to evaluate CIP in patients consuming high amounts of cocaine, with cannabis dependence history and who do not use intranasal rout. It could be useful for preventing consequences or risks of psychotic states for themselves or others.

We aimed to study the relationship between impulsivity and the addiction severity in 3 groups of outpatients attending our clinic, through the Barrat Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11) and the standarized, semistructured interview EuropAsi.

174 outpatients were analized (82.6% men, 113 cocaine-dependent as main drug (mean age 32.71 y.o. (31.45–33.96)), 43 cocaine and heroin-dependent (mean age 36.68 y.o. (33.52–39.85)) and 18 heroin dependent (mean age 37.94 (32.71–41.50)). 26.3% were cannabis-dependent and 10.9% abused of Cannabis. Statistical analysis used was the Kruskal-Wallis Test.

Differences in motor impulsivity were found between the 2 groups with cocaine dependency and the only heroin-dependent (mean = 20.59, ST ± 7.7 and mean = 17.11, ST ± 7.3, respectively; W: .019). EuropASI, showed intergroup differences in the medical, use of alcohol and legal areas. In the medical area the most affected were the heroin dependent group (mean score = .40), followed by cocaine and heroin group (mean score = .27) and the cocaine-dependent (Mean = .10). In the use of alcohol area the most affected were the cocaine group (Mean = .16) followed by the cocaine and heroin-dependent (mean = .11) and heroin dependent (Mean = .06). In the legal area the most affected were the the cocaine and heroin-dependent (Mean =.22) followed by heroin-dependent (Mean = .09) and cocaine-dependent (Mean = .07).

Patients suffering from stimulant dependency alone or together with heroin dependency show different impulsivity levels. The addiction severity varies depending on the substance of abuse. Treatment programs should be designed attending patients’ needs.

Polyfarmacy is frequent in patients with dual diagnosis.

To quantify the number and describe the treatments prescribed in a cohort of outpatients with dual diagnosis.

A descriptive and transversal study was performed. Patients with dual diagnosis treated at an Outpatient Drug Treatment Center from January 2005 to December 2009 were included. Data from demographic, clinical and therapeutical variables were gathered once. The instruments used for the diagnosis were EuropASI y SCID-I. The number and type of prescript drugs were related with protocol variables.

The study sample included 80 patients (71,6% men, average age 37,2 ± 9). Psychotic disorders (46.8%) and cocaine dependence/abuse (34.6%) were the most frequent comorbid psychiatric illnesses found. 40.8% of patients were polydrug users. The mean of prescript drugs was 3,06 ± 1,4 and only 14% of patients were on monotherapy. The frequency of drugs prescribed was: 68,4% antidepressant, 63,3% antipsychotic, 55,7% antiepileptic and 36,7% anxiolytic drugs. Older patients ( > 45years) took a major number of prescripted drugs (3,88 ± 1,1). Patients with psychotic disorders took the 43.9% of drugs prescripted (p = 0,042). Patients with benzodiazepine abuse took higher number of prescription drugs (5 ± 1,4;p = 0,003) compared with patients with other dependence or abuse.

Patients with dual diagnosis take high quantity of drugs. Older patients, diagnosis of psychosis and benzodiacepine abuse were related with polydrug prescription. Quantification of medication is recommended for treatment optimisation and avoiding yatrogenic.

Chronic consumption of cocaine can induce transient psychotic symptoms, expressed as paranoia or hallucinations. This is typically prevented by abstinence. The term Cocaine-Induced Psychosis (CIP) has been used to describe this syndrome. Impulsivity has been hypothesised are likked with CIP.

This study examined the relationship between CIP and substance consumption variables and impulsivity disorders including ADHD (Axis I) and Borderline personality disorders (BPD) (Axis II), and attempted to evaluated their link as a risk factors for CIP.

Trained psychiatrists systematically conducted a structured interview in which the conclusions from the psychotic symptoms were summarized. We used the CADDID to evaluate Adult ADHD, SCID II for axis II disorders, and the Barrat Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11).

We evaluated 163 (34,16 yo, 85,80% men) cocaine-dependent patients, according to DSM-IV criteria.

We found statistically significant association between CIP and Early age at onset of cocaine addiction (p = 0,04), cocaine use per day 6 months before starting treatment (p = 0,03), Barrat cognitive impulsivity subscale (p < 0,004), and Adult ADHD (p < 0,041). No relationship between BPD and CIP was found.

We confirm previous findings that Impulsivity disorders as ADHD or high impulsivity trails are liked to CIP. Coinciding with our previous findings, relationship between early age of onset cocaine dependence or high amounts of cocaine use and CIP was found. CIP are related with impulsivity disorders spectrum.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a risk factor for drug. Prevalence rates between 15 and 30% had been previously found in this population.

To identify the real the prevalence of ADHD in alcoholics and to find/test/ evaluate? a new type of screening (ASRS) for the initial diagnosis of ADHD in alcoholics.

312 patients from an outpatient clinic for alcoholism were recruited during 1 year. All patients completed the ASRS: Adult Self-Report Scale. DSM IV criteria were used for other psychiatric diagnoses.

1. • 312 patients (66.3% (207) men) filled out the ASRS of which 13.5% (42) were positive.

2. • Alcohol consumption: 69% for more than 1 month, 17% less than a month and 14% with active consumption.

3. • 27.6% (86) had another psychiatric diagnosis from which 69% were ASRS positive. ASRS positive patients present a major risk of having another mental disorder. OR = 8.3 (4,1 - 17,1, c2 = 0,77, p = 0,001).

4. • Other drugs: 70.5% consume other drugs. 76% of them are ASRS positive. 27.6% consumed illegal substances, 47.6% of them being ASRS positive (c2 = 9.77, p = 0,002). ASRS positive patient have more average substance abuse (including tobacco): 1.02 DT: 0.87 versus 0.72, 7 DT: 0.04 (z -2.21, p.027).

1. • ASRS detected 13.5% of ADHD diagnosis in alcoholics.

2. • Patients with positive screening present more substance abuse and more risk of psychiatric comorbidity.

Chronic consumption of cocaine can induce transient psychotic symptoms, expressed as paranoia or hallucinations. The term cocaine induced psychosis (CIP) has been used to describe this syndrome. Cocaine Induce Psichotic Disorder (CIPD) have been used to describe a full psychotic state. CIP and CIPD prevalences are not well described.

To evaluate risk factors for CIPD, in cocaine-dependents according to DSM-IV criteria.

We evaluated 150 patients (mean age 34 y.o, 81.8% men) of which 143 were included, using The PRISM (Psychiatric Research for Substance and Mental Disorders) interview. Exclusion criteria were: psychotic disorder or bipolar type I disorder, intoxication at interview, severe somatic disease at interview and language barrier. We compared three groups: group I: without any psychotic symptoms (33,33%); group II: with any psychotic symptoms (28,57%) and group III: with CIPD (38,77%).

Differences were found in Patients of Group III in the Age at onset of addiction p < .0001*, past history of imprisonment p < 0,01, Alcohol Use disorders p = .006, Cannabis use disorders P < .0001* and Hallucinogens use disorders p < 0,001.All remaining after Bonferroni corrections.

CIPD is common in this population (approximately 40%). Risk factor for suffering CIPD were described, in Cocaine-dependents. Finally, professionals who work with cocaine-dependents patients should incorporate these considerations into an integral approach.

Cocaine dependence disorder has been widely described. However, differences due to gender remain unknown.

To compare clinical gender differences in a large sample of cocaine-dependent patients.

We performed a cross-sectional, observational study in 902 patients (35.47 yo, 21.3% women) with a cocaine dependence according DSM-IV criteria, seeking treatment during 2005 to 2013. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were collected The SCID-I, SCID–II, BIS and a structured interview about cocaine-induced psychosis were performed. Simple descriptive statistics were carried out for demographic and clinical data. Bivariate analysis was made to compare the main variables by sex using SPSSvs18.0.

No differences in age of dependence onset, other clinical variables or cocaine-induced psychosis were detected. However, less cocaine used in the last month (2.12 vs 3.37g) (p < 0.009), more impulsivity (67.2 vs 63.03) (p < 0.040), and more sedative dependence (21.2% % vs 8.3%)(p< 0.00) were detected in women than in men. Affective disorders lifetime were the most prevalent (57,4%) in women. More comorbidity with anxiety disorders (p< 0.025) eating disorders (p< 0.000) and personality disorders (p< 0.039) were detected in women than in men.

Sedative dependence and anxiety disorders should be investigated in cocaine-dependent women in order to treat these conditions. Surprisingly high impulsivity level was detected and could moderate cocaine consumption. However, no difference have been found previously in studies about gender differences in cocaine-dependent patients, so this finding should be confirm in new studies.

Many risk factors for cocaine-induced psychosis (CIP)in cocaine-dependent patient (CDP) have been described although there not exactly known. Differences in the personality traits or disorders in CDP with or without CIP has been described. However, there are few studies studding the relationship between CIP and personality with a dimensional approach in order to clarify if there are any personal dimension related with CIP or/and personality disorders (PD) in CDP.

This study the relationship between CIP and personality trails evaluates with ZKPQ, and attempted to identify any personality dimension as a risk factors for CIP.

We performed a cross-sectional, observational study in 260 (75.5% man, 36.5 y.o) CDP according DSM-IV-TR seeking treatment between May 2009 and April 2013. The SCID-I, SCID–II, ZKPQ and a structured interview about CIP were performed.

CIP was reported for 66.4% of the patients. Patients with CIP had an earlier onset of cocaine dependence (p<0.05). Any PD was identified in 46.9% of the sample. Patients with CIP were diagnosed with ASPD more frequently (28.9% vs. 15.6%, X2=9.9, p<0.05). ZKPQ mean were: Sociability (6.3± 3.6), Neuroticism-Anxiety (10.8± 4.8), Impulsive Sensation Seeking (10.8±4.5), Aggression Hostility (9.06±3.2) and Activity (8.3±3.4). Patients with CIP presented higher scores in Neuroticism-Anxiety (11,4±4,7 vs. 9,6±5, t=2.7, p<0.05) and Aggression-Hostility (9,4±3,1 vs. 9,4±3,1, t=2.3, p<0.05) than patients without CIP.

The detection of high scores of neuroticism-anxiety and aggression-hostility trails should lead to evaluate the presence of CIP in CDP in order to alert them of the risk of develop CIP.

It's known that adherence to treatment is a key factor in the treatment of addictions. The presence of comorbid substance dependence disorder and other psychiatric disorder is very high. Comorbid psychiatric disorders interfere with adherence to drug treatment and detoxification.

To analyze the percentage of patients who had a voluntary discharge to Hospital Detoxification Unit and to describe sociodemographic, clinical and diagnostic test characteristics.

We descriptively studied drug dependents patients admitted to our Detoxification Unit from June 2008 to August 2012. Data was gathered at admission on demographic (age), clinical (main abused drug, psychiatric comorbidities, polydrug users, binge consumption previous intake) and alcoholtest and/or urinalysis. Results from patients with and without voluntary discharge were compared.

The study sample included 469 patients (77.7% men, average age 38.3 ± 9). 10.7% of the patients had voluntary discharge. We found significant differences between voluntary discharge and the non-voluntary discharge group on younger people (37,6 vs 40,42,p < 0,05), on heroine as main drug of abuse (40% vs 13,4%, p < 0,0001) and psychiatric comorbidities (60,8% vs 39,2%,p = 0,02), being psychotic disorders (26% vs 13,6%,p < 0,02) and borderline personality disorder (56% vs 29,4%,p < 0,0001) the most significant. Also patients who had binge consumption previous intake (84% vs 56.6%,p < 0.0001) and patients with positive urinalysis(84% vs 58.2%,p < 0.0001) had more voluntary discharge. Patients with comorbid depressive disorders had non-voluntary discharge(6% vs 18.4%,p < 0.02).

Few patients had a voluntary discharge. Younger people, opiate dependence, having psychotic and borderline personality co morbidity, binge consumption previous intake and positive urinalysis might be considered as risk factors for voluntary discharge.

The objective of our study is to describe the prevalence of insomnia during active consumption and hospitalisation for detoxification, and its influence on relapses at 3 and 6 months in drug-dependent patients.

We conducted a prospective study of drug-dependence inpatients admitted to the hospital detoxification unit between June 2008 and November 2012, and performed psychiatric follow-up on an outpatient basis over the six months following discharge. Insomnia prior to admission was measured by clinical interview from the patient concerning sleep habits, and during hospital stay using a sleep log filled out by nurse team. Demographic, clinical and diagnostic variables were recorded and a structured clinical interview (SCID) was conducted to assess psychiatric diagnoses. Relapse was deemed to be renewed use of the substance that brought about admission, which was assessed by alcohol testing and/or urinalysis.

We included 434 patients. Insomnia during consumption was reported by 64.3% of patients and 66.1% reported insomnia during hospital stay. Of the patients with preadmission insomnia, 68.3% relapsed at 3 months from discharge, as did 71% of patients with insomnia during hospital stay. Patients who relapsed at 3 months of follow-up showed significantly greater sleep initiation dysfunction prior to and during hospitalisation. Of the patients with preadmission insomnia, 69.2% had relapsed at 6 months from discharge. Patients who relapsed at 6 months of follow-up showed significantly greater sleep initiation dysfunction and global insomnia prior to and during hospitalisation.

Sleep disorders should be study as a prognostic factor in drugdependent patients.

Cocaine induced psychosis (CIP) is common but not developed in all cases. Many risk factors have been linked with CIP. A lifetime diagnosis of ADHD has been associated with the categorical presence of CIP.

The objective of this study is to determinate the relationship between impulsivity and impulsivity-realetd disorders (BPD, BN and ADHD) and CIP.

We study the presence of psychotic symptoms using a clinical interview for psychotic symptoms in a large sample of cocaine-dependent patients. Patients suffering from schizophrenia or bipolar disorders were excluded. Finally we included 287 patients in the study.

A structured interview about psychotic symptoms were systematically conducted. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM IV Axis I and Axis II disorders were used in order to identify the comorbidity. CAADID-II (Conners’ Adult ADHD Diagnostic Interview for DSM-IV) were used in order to identify ADHD comorbidity. Barrat impulsivity scale were used for evaluate impulsivity.

BIS total were 63.78. We identify a significant association between CIP and BIS cognitive subscale p < 0.003 and BIS total p < 0.021. We also identify a significant association between CIP and adult ADHD in cocaine-dependent patients p < .0.002. We fail to identify association between CIP and BPD and BN.

CIP is related with BIS cognitive subscale and BIS total scores, and with ADHD comorbidity in cocaine-dependent patients. As well these findings could be useful for a clinical approach to the risks of psychotic states in cocaine-dependent patients.

Substance-dependent patients(SDP) have more personality disorders(PD) than general population; and they present more frequent and severe levels of depression and anxiety.

To study cluster C personality disorders in SDP.

We included a clinical sample of 822(621 males) SDP according to the DSM-IV-TR criteria seeking treatment in the Outpatient Drug Clinic Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona, Spain.

The assessment process consisted of three interview sessions conducted by trained psychiatrists and psychologists using SCID I and II, BDI, STAI-R/S. Exclusion criteria were:intoxication at baseline examination, severe somatic disease at baseline examination and low language proficiency.

39.2% of the sample presented at least one PD and 9.55% presented a cluster C PD. Of them the found prevalence were Avoidant(44.9%), Dependt(11.5%), Obssessive-compulsive(37.2%), comorbidity (6.4%). The addiction prevalences that Cluster C PD patients show were: dependent of alcohol 9.4%, benzodiazepines 18.5%, opioids 6.1%, cocaine 9.7 and cannabis 12.3%.

70.5% of the PD cluster C group were men, however differences according to the cluster C PD were found, being higher the proportion of men in Obsessive-compulsive PD (85.7%) and fewer in Dependent PD patients (33.7%)(χ2 =12.19, p = .007).

Cluster C PD patients presented more depressive symptoms and showed higher scores in anxiety-trait than patient with Cluster A or B PD, being this difference statistically significant.

There is a high rate of cluster C personality disorders among addicted patients. Higher levels of anxiety depression are detected in these patients. Clinicians should be check systematically this symptoms and traits in addicted patients.

There is no pharmacotherapy with specific indication for psychostimulant detoxification. Few studies have been made about pharmacological strategies in this dependence. In dual patients, literature about this remains limited.

To describe socio-demographic features, drug-related experiences, primary psychiatric disorders and therapeutical approaches in dual inpatients, and compare them with non dual inpatients.

We present a descriptive and cross-sectional study, based on the description of 300 admitted patients for psychostimulant detoxification from June 2008 to August 2011. Clinical and socio-demographic characteristics were registered using an ad-hoc questionnaire. Structured interviews based on SCID I, SCID II, ASI and CAADID were performed to screen psychiatric co-morbidity.

Almost 63% reached criteria for dual diagnosis (72.4% men, mean age 36 ± 7,8 years). The most common diagnostics were psychotic disorders (45.5%) in axis I and Cluster B personality disorders in axis II (31.8%). 44.7% were multiple-drug abusers. 57.9% of dual patients had been previously hospitalized in comparison with 28.1% of non dual patients, being this statistically significant. Dual patients used a higher number of pharmacological treatments at discharging from hospital (3,1 ± 1,5 vs 1,9 ± 1,4, p < 0.001). The most frequent approaches were antiepileptics (80,8%), antidepressant (67.7%), antipsychotics (51.3%), interdictors (16.9%), anxiolytics (12.8%) and opioid agonists (10.4%).

Dual patients admitted for a psychostimulant detoxification frequently reach criteria for psychotic disorders and cluster B personality disorders. They exhibit a severe condition, requiring numerous admissions and presenting higher prevalence of poly-drug abuse. Similarly, they need additional pharmacological strategies to complete detoxification.

Drug use among medical students is partially unknown. However, consumption among medical students may have a similar role if compared with the rest of population.

To study drugs use among medical students comparing gender and evolution on drugs use.

Students enrolled in the fifth year of the medical studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, from the course 2008-2009 to 2014-2015, were offered the chance to participate voluntarily in the study.

The students agreed to participate anonymously in a survey filled in during the beginning days of the psychiatry classes. They were asked about their drug consumption, including legal drugs (alcohol and tobacco) and illegal drugs. During the seven study years, 469 questionnaires were collected (74.1% of women) and mean age was 22.77 (20-35) yearsold.

The students reported consuming alcohol (66.7%; 65.5% women, 70.4% men), tobacco (18.6%; 18.1% women, 20% men) and illegal drugs (15.1%; 12.4% women, 22.8% men). The female students consumed fewer illegal drugs than the men (p 0.008) as showed above. Comparing 2008/2009 and 2014/2015 courses, the consumption was: alcohol 75.5% and 65.7%, tobacco 24.5% and 13.2% and illegal drugs 22.4% and 14.7%.

Drug consumption is an important problem among medicalstudents who will becomeprescribing doctors in a few months after the survey. There is a decreased tendency to use illegal drugs. Due to the gender differences on illegal drug use a special focus must be placed on the male group.

The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of caffeine with or without biperiden in the treatment of cocaine dependent patients.

A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial has been carried out in an inpatient regime during up to 13 days. Eligible patients were randomized to caffeine plus biperiden or caffeine plus biperiden placebo or caffeine placebo plus biperiden placebo.

Eighty five treatment-seeking patients were enrolled in this study. Patients were stabilized with a mean caffeine dose up to 15 mg/Kg. Results show that all three treatments are well tolerated and a clear reduction in cocaine withdrawal and craving was observed. Nevertheless, no statistically significant differences were found between groups in any outcome.

This study shows that inpatient cocaine detoxification with high caffeine doses, with or without biperiden, is well tolerated and allows further research on the usefulness of caffeine in the treatment of cocaine withdrawal and craving. Nevertheless, the selection of an inpatient hospital regime hampered the demonstration of the superiority of caffeine treatment versus placebo.

Cocaine consumption can induce transient psychotic symptoms. Cocaine induced psychosis (CIP) is common but not developed in all cases. However, prevalence and clinical features are not well known. In psychiatry settings different studies have reported prevalence ranging between 29%–86.5%.There are few samples including more than 150 patients for studding this topic.

The objective of this study is to determinate the CIP prevalence and the most prevalent psychotic symptoms.

We study presence of psychotic symptoms using a clinical interview for psychotic symptoms in a large sample of 287 cocaine-dependent patients.

We study the presence of psychotic symptoms using a clinical interview for psychotic symptoms in a large sample of cocainedependent patients. Patients suffering from schizophrenia or bipolar disorders were excluded. Finally we included 287 patients in the study. (80.8% men and 35.77 yo).

A structured interview were systematically conducted. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM IV Axis I and Axis II disorders were used in order to identify the comorbidity.

Psychotic symptoms were detected in 59.9% of the sample. The most frequent symptoms reported lifetime was suspiciousness 38.6% and paranoid beliefs 27.2% Auditory hallucinations were reported by 23.6%, visual hallucinations by 13.3%, and kinesthetic hallucinations by 7.8%. Motor alterations were not evaluated.

Our dates confirm previous study. CIP prevalence is high. Motor alterations were not evaluated, so symptoms could be underestimated. Identifying this kind of symptoms can be useful in order to minimize risks of psychotic states for the patients or others.
