The boiling 5-M-NaOH treatment was found to aid in the identification and characterization of goethite and hematite by effectively concentrating the two Fe oxides in kaolinitic-gibbsitic soil clays. No transformations of goethite to hematite or hematite to goethite were detected, but poorly crystalline, highly Al-substituted goethite was found to dissolve and recrystallize into a more well-crystalline, less Al-substituted goethite in samples low in Si. The Si released from kaolinite was sufficient to block goethite dissolution and recrystallization in kaolinitic samples, but noncrystalline silica had to be added to samples rich in gibbsite to minimize this effect.

Orientations of OH-vectors in structural hydroxyl groups of layer silicates were defined both from diffraction data and calculations of electrostatic energy. The comparison of the results showed that for the hydroxyls of the 2:1 layers of chlorites and micas the positions of the hydroxyl protons are mainly determined by electrostatics. For the hydroxyls of dickite, amesite, and the brucitic sheets of chlorite, the results derived by the two methods differed systematically from each other, pointing to a change in the nature of the bond in these OH-groups.

The orientation of the OH-vectors in hydroxyl groups of micas of different compositions, polytype modifications, and symmetry were calculated by the method of minimization of electrostatic energy. The orientations are strongly affected by the peculiarities of structures, and even slight deviations from the ideal dioctahedral periodicity can introduce a correction of as much as 10° to the value of the polar angle. Ordering of cations in octahedra lead to twisting of the OH-bond towards the octahedron with lower charge and larger dimension. The latter is less true for cation ordering in tetrahedra. Because of these factors and the dependence of the hydrogen position on the coordinates of heavy atoms, such calculations can give reliable results only if the structure has been refined with high precision. Different polytypes of micas displayed the same orientation of the OH-vectors with respect to the axes of a separate layer, if the stacking sequence did not introduce specific distortions of the 2:1 layer.

Regular vertical variations in mineralogy and chemistry indicate that underclay beneath the Herrin (No. 6) coal in southwestern Illinois has undergone in situ alteration. Alteration resulted from the downward movement of hydrogen ions, as indicated by the progressive leaching of acid-sensitive minerals adjacent to the coal. Mineralogical trends observed in the underclay with increasing depth below the coal include: (1) a decrease in the expandability of mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S); (2) an increase in the amount of ordered I/S with respect to randomly interstratified I/S; (3) an increase in the amount of discrete illite with respect to expandable clays; and (4) an increase in chlorite and calcite. Ordered I/S is the dominant mixed-layer clay where calcite is present, but randomly interstratified I/S dominates where calcite is absent. The pH of the underclay also increases with depth. These trends are consistent with an origin by acid leaching of a preexisting mineral assemblage that included illite, chlorite, and calcite. Other acid-alteration trends may be expected for different precursor minerals and for different leaching intensities and durations.

Nordstrandite was obtained synthetically by precipitation of Al(OH)3 at pH 9.0 to 11.0 in citrate or malate systems with Al: carboxylic acid molar ratios of 10–100 in the absence and in the presence of montmorillonite. Examination by transmission and scanning electron microscopy showed that the nordstrandite had a tabular morphology in the clay-free systems with Al: carboxylic acid ratio >50. Because the inhibiting effect on crystallization of the citrate or malat e anion decreases with increase in pH, the crystal size varied from <2 μm at pH 10 to 5 μm at pH 11. With increasing concentration of citrate or malate, the nordstrandite crystals became more elongated in the c-direction probably due to organic anion occupation of the coordination sites of Al on the edge faces parallel to the c-axis. Irregular growth along the c-axis was probably due to steric hindrance by the organic ligands distorting the arrangement of the unit layers of nordstrandite.

The catalytic effect of montmorillonite on the formation of nordstrandite was confirmed. Nordstrandite synthesized in the presence of montmoriUonite at pH 9.0 presented an ill-defined ovoidal outline (0.2–0.5 μm), some showing shafts of bayerite growing from the center. At higher pH, where conditions for crystalline growth were again more favorable, nordstrandite crystals nucleated on the montmorillonite surfaces and condensed in clusters of weak face-to-face associations of plates.

The nature of organo-phosphate and carboxylate bonding in aqueous suspensions of noncrystalline alumina, boehmite, and gibbsite has been studied using the anionic nitroxide spin probes 3-carboxy-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1-pyrrolidinyloxyl and 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidinooxyl dihydrogen phosphate. Analysis of the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of these molecules revealed that adsorption of both molecules occurred rapidly on the high surface area alumina and boehmite, whereas only the organophosphate adsorbed on gibbsite. A loss in rotational motion of the molecules accompanied adsorption, with the greater degree of motional restriction observed for the carboxylate attributed to steric restrictions to rotation about the surface-bound C-COO− bond axis. The ease of displacement of adsorbed carboxylate from surface binding sites by weakly adsorbing anions (Cl−, ClO4−) compared to organophosphate suggests that the carboxylate adsorbed by ligand exchange of a single surface OH, whereas the organophosphate probably formed a bidentate bond. The carboxylate bound on noncrystalline alumina showed evidence of nonspecific electrostatic adsorption in addition to ligand exchange of surface OH. This weak bonding was indicated by a moderate loss in rotational motion and ease of exchangeability.
