Research transparency

The Journal of Functional Programming believes in the importance of transparent and reproducible research.

Where possible, we encourage authors to make available to readers the code, data, and other materials that underpin their findings. We encourage the use of Data Availability Statements to describe whether such materials have been made available to readers and, if so, how readers may access them.

When sharing materials, we recommend using a dedicated repository appropriate to the materials. In particular, repositories that provide permanent identifiers and have robust preservation policies will help to ensure the long-term integrity of published research. For code, a system such as GitHub or its equivalents is a natural, but not exclusive, choice. If using GitHub, we recommend ensuring code on GitHub can be preserved and cited by assigning a DOI.

We also encourage authors to cite software, data, and other materials they have used in their research, alongside literature citations, to recognise the importance of all kinds of research outputs.

For empirical studies, we encourage authors to follow best practices in reporting their methodology. Reporting guidelines for many study designs, focussed on health research but including quantitative and qualitative scholarship across many disciplines, can be found in JARS, the Journal Article Reporting Standards or in the EQUATOR Network.
