Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) seed coat colour, tannin content and susceptibility to bruchids

Abstract

Five mutants for seed coat colour from the faba bean, Viciafaba L. variety BF 2/2 (Beladi) were tested qualitatively and quantitatively for tannin content. The susceptibility of the mutants to Bruchidius incarnatus (Boh.) and Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) was also evaluated. All seed coats contained tannins (0.75–3.75%). The darker the colour the lower the tannin content. Cotyledons with testas removed were devoid of tannins. The thickness of the seed coats ranged from 0.146–0.155 mm, however, differences among mutants were not significant. Faba seeds were more suitable for the multiplication of B. incarnatus than C. maculatus. The poor performance of the latter was manifested as low fecundity, high mortality and longer developmental period. It was concluded that selection for white coloured faba seeds should not be discouraged on the basis of its assumed susceptibility to bruchids.

Cinq variétés de pericarpes de féve, Vicia Faba L. BF 2/2 (Beladi) ont subi des examens tant sur le plant qualitatif que quantitatif pour mesurer leur teneur tannique. La susceptibilité des varietés, Bruchidius incarnatus (Boh.) et Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) estégalement evaluée. Tous les péricarpes contiennent du tannin. Plus le pericarpe est sombre, moins est sa teneur en tannin. Les varietés Detested Cotyledons sont privé du tannin. Le diamétre des pericarpes varie de 0.146 à 0.155 mm, quoique les différences entre les varietés ne sont pas signifiantes. Les graines Faba conviennent pour la multiplication de B. incarnatus mieux que pour le C. maculatus. La maigre performance de ce dernier revient à sa médiocre fecondité, un taux important de mortalité et une période plus longue de maturité pour les graines Faba. Toutefois le devéloppement de ces deux insectes n'est paslouché par Lacouleur du péricarpe on sa teneur en tannin. En conclusion, il est recommandé de ne pas décourager l'option Faba (blanc) sous le prétexte de sa susceptibilité aux bruchidis.
