Summary
On the horizon, billows of smoke could be seen rising from the neighboring town of Shechem. In his quest to become king, an abhorrent figure named Abimelek had set it ablaze, killing almost one thousand of its inhabitants. Now he had besieged and captured the town of Thebez. The inhabitants knew they too faced death at the hands of this scoundrel, and with no help in sight, they have taken refuge on the roof of a fortified tower.
