Summary
Im folgenden gebe ich cinen Bericht über alle Felsbilder, die ich in deri Jahren 1903–1905 am oberen Rio Negro und seinen Nebenflüssen und am Pira-parana, einem Zufluß des Yapurá, gesehen und zum größten Teil kopiert habe oder von deren Existenz ich sichere Kenntnis erhielt.
Kritische Betrachtungen, die ich über einzelne Felsbilder an Ort und Stelle in mein Tagebuch schrieb, sind hier wörtlich wiedergegeben und durch den Druck hervorgehoben, da sie am besten den Eindruck kennzeichnen, den ich als unbeeinflußter Beschauer beim Anblick dieser Zeichen hatte.
Ich werde mich bemühen, bei der Erklärung der Figuren, mich mit Hintenansetzung aller Phantasie möglichst durch technische Erwägungen leiten zu lassen. Dabei werden wir sehen, daß einige Formen ornamentalen Charakters immer wiederkehren und häufig in Kompositionen dazu dienen, konkrete Begriffe darzustellen. Ja, man kann sagen, daß sich fast alle Figuren mehr oder weniger in diese Grundformen zerlegen lassen.
Die Figuren finden sich meistens unregelmäßig zerstreut über die Felsen verteilt. Zum bequemeren Vergleich sind sie auf den Tafeln regelmäßig angeordnet. Linien, die allem Anschein nach erst neuerdings entstanden sind, und andere, deren Verlauf infolge von Verwitterung nicht mehr genau zu erkennen war, habe ich in der Zeichnung punktiert.
