Summary
The preceding chapters suggested some absolute numbers for a well-defined span considered mostly as a whole: antiquity, from Pericles to Caracalla. I have implied so far that, century by century, the number of authors did not fluctuate by much. Helpful, for our purposes; but also surprising, and of course in need of qualification.
