Summary
The scale of ancient culture involves several different quantities. First, there is the size of the audience; then, the number of authors. (Note that this is a study of ancient literary practices: we engage primarily with books. So, by “audience” I mean primarily “book owners”, while by “authors” I mean primarily those having a book to their name.) Finally, there is the scale of the distribution of the object itself, what I think of as the ancient “bibliosphere” – the total amount of literature circulating on papyrus.
