Summary
On June 26, 2017, the Supreme Court stepped into a dispute with major political ramifications. The justices granted petitions for certiorari surrounding challenges to President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 13780, Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States. The order had sparked controversy even before taking effect. While it ostensibly sought to “prevent infiltration by foreign terrorists,” critics argued that it was “motivated principally by a desire to exclude Muslims from the United States” (Trump v. International Refugee Assistance Project [2017], 5). Some lower courts agreed. Thus, the Court’s decision thrust it into the political spotlight involving a prominent religious minority in the United States.
