Desde los años cuarenta a los setenta del siglo pasado Frank Pierce, catedrático de la universidad de Sheffield, hizo el papel de Fénix o de excéntrico irlandés, en calidad de único especialista mundial de la poesía épica española de la Edad Moderna. En sus varios libros y numerosos artículos, Pierce suele lamentarse del olvido en que ha caído este género, de la escasez de estudios en profundidad y de buenas ediciones. Estas declaraciones son tal vez efecto de self-fashioning académico puesto que uno de los mejores aportes de su conocida monografía, La poesía épica del Siglo de Oro (1961, 1968), consiste en una minuciosa ‘historia crítica’ de la poesía épica desde los orígenes hasta la fecha de redacción. Cuarenta años después, el tópico del género desertado por la crítica seguía vigente en los trabajos de una investigadora norteamericana, Elizabeth Davis, autora de uno de los pocos libros dedicados a un conjunto significativo de poemas épicos españoles. Entre tanto el tópico había sufrido una mutación. Para Frank Pierce, era necesario abogar por el estudio de un género del que se pensaba, tal vez sin suficiente examen, que apenas había producido obras cuya dignidad literaria justificara un estudio detenido. Para Elizabeth Davis, en una época que piensa que hay que estudiar las obras independientemente de su rango en el canon, el desdén de la crítica se debe a motivos ideológicos y se hace necesario probar que merece la pena dedicar tiempo y atención a un género masculino, guerrero, imperial y católico.
