Summary
El tema pasional, de substancial difusión en el Medievo, disfrutó de un renovado florecimiento literario en la Península en las primeras décadas del siglo XVII, con la publicación de obras como los romanceros espirituales de José de Valdivielso (1612) y Lope de Vega (1624). Entroncados en sus antepasados medievales en lo que respecta a lo emocional y sensorial, y marcadamente imbuidos tanto por el espíritu de Trento como por el de los Ejercicios ignacianos, abundan los poemas a la pasión que supuestamente aspiran a erigirse en artefactos literarios capaces de educar y deleitar según la preceptiva horaciana —prodesse et delectare— tanto a nivel poético como espiritual. Sin embargo, aunque es más que probable que aún tengamos una visión incompleta y que queden archivos y documentos importantes por desempolvar, el gusto peninsular por la lírica de tema pasional no parece haberse trasladado al contexto americano. La producción de poesía religiosa en las Indias fue substancial y significativa —abundan los poemas al Santísimo Sacramento, al nacimiento de Cristo, a la Virgen María, a personajes bíblicos y a una pobladísima corte de santos, en su mayoría escritos para justas poéticas y eventos semejantes— pero los episodios de la pasión de Cristo no parecen haber inspirado a muchos ingenios americanos y es comparativamente reducido el número de textos líricos que los tratan.
